The Florida Senate’s new budget chair is coming out in support of Gov. Rick Scott’s plan to provide pay raises for the state’s law enforcement agencies. At an Orlando press conference, Scott announced his proposed budget for next year includes $11.7 million to reward Florida’s close to 4,000 law enforcement officers. “I will propose a 5 percent pay raise for all sworn state law enforcement officers as part of my 2017-2018 recommended budget,” said Scott. “The brave men and women who serve Florida as members of our state law enforcement agencies work hard each and every day to make Florida the safest place to live and raise a family. And, they deserve to be rewarded for their life-saving work.”

Detectives assigned to the Lake County sheriff’s Cyber Crimes Unit recently concluded a weeklong operation targeting subjects online attempting to meet children for sexual activity. The operation, dubbed Treasure Florida’s Kids, resulted in 10 arrests for various sex-related crimes.

Collier County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Wednesday, advising people to put their own safety first if they choose to help or not help an officer or deputy. The sheriff’s office said the statement released Wednesday is not discouraging people from assisting officers who are outnumbered or being attacked, but more of a reminder to assess the situation and personal skills before jumping in.
“You need to make a decision based on your own physical abilities, your training, your experience,” said CCSO Commander Bill McDonald.

Authorities say a gunman threatened some of the 11 people held hostage at a Jacksonville, Florida, credit union before they were rescued by SWAT team members. Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams says that after the suspect on Thursday put his gun to the back of the head of one hostage, SWAT team members had resolved to storm the bank at the first opportunity.

A four-month undercover investigation dubbed “Operation All There” by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office resulted in 24 arrests to cut down illegal drug activity.
“The people who were involved in this operation are not your casual drug user,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “These are drug dealers and repeat offenders. If we successfully remove the drug dealers and repeat offenders, crime goes down.”
