From Aug. 20: Attorney General Pam Bondi and Marion County Sheriff Chris Blair recently arrested five suspects in a massive shoplifting ring targeting North and Central Florida grocery stores. According to arrest warrants, the suspects stole more than $50,000 worth of beauty, dental care, medical and other products from Publix and Winn-Dixie stores and then sold the items on eBay.

From Aug. 6: The use of civil citations to divert juvenile offenders from the justice system has spread to nearly all Florida counties. A new law goes into effect Oct .1, giving teens who are apprehended by law enforcement second or third chances to avoid arrest. … "To me, it's all about making the good decision," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said. "It's less important the number of civil citations a kid gets — it's the circumstances surrounding it."

From July 9: The Legislature recently authorized $800,000 for the Florida Sheriff's Association for crisis training, a good first step. Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri notes that a rigorous one-week training program recently helped a deputy elude and calm a knife-wielding woman who in the past might have been shot.

From Nov. 25: Two Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputes have been awarded Medals of Courage for their actions to save another deputy after he was shot at in Cantonment last September. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 1500 block of Crystal Drive to assist EMS after the 19-year-old’s family thought he was having a heart attack. Sheriff David Morgan said the family believed the man had ingested some type of narcotics. EMS was standing by and the family had been locked out of the house.
