A Special Message From Scott Burns, Past President, IAEG
Welcome to the 34th IAEG Connector, an electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
This is the month of transition as we change the elected members of our organization. I have tried to highlight our new vice presidents over the past two months. They are officially now the new officers. I am now the "past president!" Next week I will summarize our four years as an executive committee. I will then ask our new president, Prof. Rafig Azzam, to talk about the next four years.
In this newsletter there are many very interesting news items, and please note that you can now start submitting an abstract to our annual conference which will be the ARC 12 in Korea in September!
Enjoy!
Scott Burns, Past President, IAEG

IAEG
Geology Applied to Engineering represents a thorough and up-to-date textbook for courses in Applied PhysicaI Geology, Geology for Engineers and Engineering Geology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It
contains appropriate information for geologists and engineers who are involved in designing and constructing
engineering structures, as all structures are located either on the Earth or in the Earth, or composed of earth
materials. This textbook also provides the fundamentals of subject material included in the Examination for
Professional Licensure of Geologists, a growing need for geologists who work in the public sector.

The Annual Conference SAGEEP 2019 is in Portland in March 2019 and features a full parallel Geohazards Conference including hazards for manmade structures like dams and levees and also a parallel Shallow Marine and Coastal Geophysics Conference, both of which should be of interest to AEG. AEG participation/contribution would be most welcomed.

Experts are at odds over the cause of an extraordinary landfall amid reports of hot rocks and extraterrestrial meteorite fragments on a 160 meter-high hill partially now damming the Bureya, a tributary of the Amur River. Some experts believe the phenomenon may be a landslide, but this is disputed especially by those who have visited the remote site, some 1,300 kilometers by road from regional capital Khabarovsk.

Energy Resources of Australia is reviewing “all funding options” to pay for the full closure and rehabilitating of its Ranger uranium mine, after studies showed the cost would be almost $300 million higher than previous estimates.
Delivering is fourth quarter results, the company said the rise in costs was largely due to expenditures associated with additional water treatment, revegetation requirements and tailings transfer to pit three, as the mine is surrounded by a World-Heritage-listed National Park.
