|Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG
Welcome to our 92nd IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
|Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
The big news last week was the IUGS postponing the 36th International Geological Congress because of the coronavirus. November has been mentioned as a possible date for the congress convening.
Our sister society, the International Geosynthetics Society, has offered its newsletter to our members — just click on the section below.
As the world concentrates on the coronavirus, natural hazards continue around the globe: major flooding in Iran, a glacier collapse in Peru and major landslides in Brazil.
Start thinking about submitting an abstract for our regional meeting Athens in the autumn!
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
International Geological Congress
The government of India has reviewed the situation emerging out of the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). It considers the health and safety of the esteemed delegates and guests paramount. In view of this, the government has postponed the congress to a later date.

As you will notice, we have a new design and user-friendly search functions. We have three social media accounts, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, to post photos on the web (and short films) in the Photo Gallery of our website. We also have direct connection with IAEG Connector and Frontiers in Earth Science.
In the new website, there are no more restricted areas and it is not
necessary to register on the website. If you want to make changes to the
Commissions or National Groups or to report Congresses or Courses, you must
send the material to be posted on the website to email@example.com.
All members of the IAEG are urged to participate more actively in
updating the website and send photographs of construction sites and events
that may affect our association with a brief descriptive caption and with
the name of the author. Even webinars are welcome, and from now, even the
presentations in PowerPoint of projects and research with their results will be welcome. Please
send all material to firstname.lastname@example.org.

The 3rd European Regional Conference of IAEG will be
hosted in Athens, Greece, by the IAEG National Group of Greece. The
conference will take place Sept. 20-24, 2020.
A European regional conference of IAEG was decided in the last council
in South Korea. The activation again of the IAEG regional
conference in Europe is a fundamental action for our region.
Unfortunately, since the regional conference of IAEG in Europe has
been inactive for almost 12 years, we do not have the chance to meet
in our region often (the last was five years ago in Torino). Considering
that almost half of the members and National Groups (NGs) of IAEG are
from European region, we hope that the initiative will become a stable
event, involving the scientific and professional community of the same
The conference will be organized with the collection of extensive
abstracts in order to reduce the complexity of the event due to the
limited time. More details about the 3rd European Regional Conference
will be available in few days on the conference website.
It is our pleasure also to announce that the Executive Office and
Council of IAEG for 2020 will be hosted in the occasion of the
conference in Athens.
The next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be moreover
presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.
We are now calling for nominations of Hans Cloos Medal, Marcel Arnould Medal and Richard Wolters Prize for 2020, which are awarded biannually to our distinguished members. Please kindly see the attached notifications.
Nominations should be submitted to the Secretary General by the deadline requested in the notifications. For more information and guidelines for the nomination, please refer to the bylaw Part E. Awards and Prizes.

MineInvest Kazakhstan 2020
Kazakhstan is one of the world’s most promising emerging markets for natural resources and is one of the 10 leading countries in the world for mineral reserves. To ensure sustainable development of its mineral wealth, in the next few years the government of Kazakhstan is planning to issue over 3,000 exploration licenses and support the development of junior mining sector. Until now, lack of funding was the main impediment to the growth of junior mining in the country.
The 4th Junior Mining Projects Competition MineInvest will be held April 1, 2020, at the Radisson Astana Hotel as part of the 11th MINEX Kazakhstan 2020 Mining and Exploration Forum.
Cities on Volcanoes 11
On behalf of the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in collaboration with post graduate programme of “Environmental, Disaster and Crisis Management Strategies”(EDCM) and the Natural History Museum (University of Crete), are honored to invite you to participate in the Cities on Volcanoes 11. CoV11 is taking place, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, May, 23-27, 2020.
It will be our pleasure to welcome you to Crete and give you the opportunity to visit Knossos (the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete called the oldest city of Europe), and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum(one of Europe’s most important museums with archaeological finds from all over Crete, covering over 5500 years of the island’s history).
Additionally, we will organize several field trips to Methana, Santorini volcano, Psiloritis UNESCO Global Geopark, The Minoan Villa with the Lilies, etc. We strongly believe that Crete, considered as one of the top global tourist destinations, having easy access and the appropriate infrastructure, will fulfill all your expectations for a successful meeting.

Heavy rainfall on March 2-3, 2020, has triggered many landslides in the urban area of Baixada Santista in SE Brazil. Globo has a good report that provides details of the losses — it was detailing 18 fatalities at the time of publication, with a further 30 people reported missing.
Flooding in Lorestan Province in western Iran has left villages cut off and prompted flood rescues and evacuations.
Heavy rain that began around Feb. 24 increased levels of rivers in the province, including the Khoram, Kashkan and Poldekhtar, according to media reports. Rain also triggered some landslides in hilly areas of the province.

On Feb. 26, 2020, an enormous, catastrophic debris flow tore down the Salkantay River in Santa Teresa, Peru. This event has killed at least four people, with a further 13 reported to be missing. Given the magnitude of the flow, this number is probably uncertain.
