Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG

|
Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
|
Major geological events are happening around the world! In Southwest Iceland on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 8,000 small quakes are signaling a potential volcanic eruption, and one of our most famous volcanoes, Krakatoa, has a new volcano in its crater that just erupted.
We have also mentioned reports on landslides in Denali National Park in Alaska and a landslide in West Java.
The Geological Society of London has also listed some new engineering geology and hydrogeological titles too.
Also, lots of other news items are listed below!
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG

IAEG
This Bulletin of the Association of Engineering Geologists and the Environment is now totally electronic with online access. It started in January. The two editors, Professor Louis Wong and Professor Resat Ulusay, have been working very hard on the bulletin and it has been very successful! The first volume came out in January of 2020 (Volume 79, Number 1) with 37 articles and 568 pages! This week Volume 79, Number 2 came out with 552 pages and 37 articles. You can get both of the list of titles of Number 1 and 2 below. I will continue to list the articles every two months when a new bulletin comes out. Next week I will have a short section on accessing your copies.

Mapping in Engineering Geology
Compiled by J S Griffiths (University of Plymouth, UK)
294 pages, paperback
ISBN: 9781862391017
$70.00
This volume is a compilation of 13 classic papers on mapping for engineering purposes that have been published in the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and the Geological Society Engineering Geology Special Publications during the past 30 years. It is produced in response to the concerns expressed by a number of senior practitioners in Engineering Geology that were summarized in the first Glossop lecture by Fookes (1997): 'I go as far as saying that I believe that engineering geology mapping, even sketch mapping, is particularly underused in British practice'. By compiling this collection of some of the most important papers on mapping for engineering, Dr Griffiths aims to introduce a new generation of engineering geologists to the cost effective techniques of engineering geological and geomorphological mapping. This publication would be of interest to practicing engineering geologists, civil engineers, undergraduate and postgraduate engineering geologists, earth scientists, and geomorphologists. The publication could also be used as a basic undergraduate and postgraduate reference book for courses in applied geology, environmental geology and engineering geology.
Military Aspects of Hydrogeology
Edited by E P F Rose and J D Mather
376 pages, hardback
ISBN: 9781862393400
$220.00
This book features military aspects of geology from both sides in the two World Wars and in wider historical and geographical contexts. Military necessity gave impetus to tunnelling, quarrying, trenching, aerial photographic interpretation and assessment of both cross-country trafficability and groundwater conditions. Fortification additionally involved aspects of engineering geology.
Clay Materials Used in Construction
Edited by G. M. Reeves, I. Sims and J. C. Cripps
552 pages, hardback
ISBN: 9781862391840
$200.00
Concluding the trilogy on geological materials in construction, this authoritative volume reviews many uses of clays, ranging from simple fills to sophisticated products. Comprehensive and international coverage is achieved by an expert team, including geologists, engineers and architects. Packed with information prepared for a wide readership, this unique handbook is also copiously illustrated. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Professor Sir Alec Skempton.
Various definitions of 'clay' are explored. Clay mineralogy is described, plus the geological formation of clay deposits and their fundamental materials properties. World and British clay deposits are reviewed and explained. New compositional data are provided for clay formations throughout the stratigraphic column. Investigative techniques and interpretation are considered, ranging from site exploration to laboratory assessment of composition and engineering performance.
Groundwater in Fractured Bedrock Environments: Managing Catchment and Subsurface Resources
Edited by U. Ofterdinger, A. M. MacDonald, J.-C. Comte and M. E. Young
250 pages, hardback
ISBN: 9781786204011
$180.00
Fractured bedrock aquifers have traditionally been regarded as low-productivity aquifers, with only limited relevance to regional groundwater resources. It is now being increasingly recognised that these complex bedrock aquifers can play an important role in catchment management and subsurface energy systems. At shallow to intermediate depth, fractured bedrock aquifers help to sustain surface water baseflows and groundwater dependent ecosystems, provide local groundwater supplies and impact on contaminant transfers on a catchment scale. At greater depths, understanding the properties and groundwater flow regimes of these complex aquifers can be crucial for the successful installation of subsurface energy and storage systems, such as deep geothermal or Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage systems and natural gas or CO2 storage facilities as well as the exploration of natural resources such as conventional/unconventional oil and gas.
New Insights into Structural Interpretation and Modelling
Edited by D A Nieuwland
320 pages, hardback
ISBN: 9781862391338
$180.00
This title has arisen from the Geological Society of London conference of the same name. Since the publication of the predecessor of this book (Modern insights into structural interpretation, validation and modelling, SP99, 1996, edited by Buchanan & Nieuwland) much progress has been made. This has been primarily thanks to the continuously increasing computing speed and computer memory capacity, which has positively affected all fields in structural interpretation, seismics and modelling, directly or indirectly. New insights in structural interpretation and modelling, presents a balanced overview of what the title promises. It is intended as a book that will serve the experienced professional as well as more advanced students in earth sciences, with a broad selection of topics ranging from classical field based studies to state of the art analogue and numerical modelling. The leaders of their fields have written some of the chapters, whereas younger authors with a fresh outlook and new ideas have written other chapters.

American Geosciences Institute
With many geoscience programs now needing to quickly shift to online teaching, the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) wants to make sure all faculty are aware of the 29 modules in the free-to-take Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) platform, which is a joint effort of AGI, AIPG, SEPM, and ASBOG. GOLI courses range in duration from 1 to 10 hours in length, addressing a range of geoscience topics and skills from writing in the geosciences to geoethics to advanced environmental geochemistry, among others. These modules are ready to go and available for your students right now.
GOLI courses are always free-to-take. If a student wishes to earn continuing education credits for successfully completing the course and apply them towards licensing or other professional needs, they have the option to pay a nominal fee. In view of the escalating challenges we all face as a result of the
coronavirus-COVID-19 pandemic and the need to safeguard the health and
well-being of our exhibitors and visitors, we would like to inform you
that the EUROENGEO 2020 Organizing Committee is carefully monitoring
the situation across the globe, and assessing the implications of
containment and prevention measures by health authorities for the

Volcanic activity is escalating in a region of Iceland that has not erupted for 800 years, with scientists warning it could cause disruption for centuries to come.
Since Jan. 21, the Reykjanes peninsula southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, has experienced more than 8,000 earthquakes and about 10 centimeters of land uplift due to magma intrusions underground.
