Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG

|
Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
|
Welcome to the 152nd IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting environmental and engineering geologists around the world!
The subject line this week is an upcoming project in Norway that is incredible. They are building a ship tunnel from one fjord to another big enough to fit a cruise ship. It will be 37m by 27m with a depth of water of 12 meters. To do this, they will be using many engineering geologists, geotechnical engineers, and rock mechanics people — our profession!
Next, we present the first circular for our next IAEG congress which will be held in Chengdu, China, in 2022. It is Congress XIV! We also present the first electronic newsletter for 2021, which is put together by our staff at our home office in China under the leadership of Secretary General Prof. Faquan Wu.
There are many other current events too besides the Norwegian ship tunnel! A large quick clay landslide in Quebec, Canada, and a large landslide in Colombia that dammed a river are examples. The oldest water in the world has been found in a mine in Canada — over a billion years old! A rock slope failure in a quarry in Thailand is also recorded. Engineering geology is never boring!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG

IAEG creates its own YouTube channel for all past webinars
IAEG
Recently the IAEG has implemented its own communication system by creating its own YouTube channel where we have published all the webinars already present on the specific page of our site and those in progress. (IAEG YouTube channel). This is next to the YEG streaming webinar channel, which is also posted on the IAEG website.
In these pandemic times, many lectures or conferences take place online. Unfortunately, the different time zones do not allow many in the world to be able to follow and learn about the interesting online lessons. In the era of globalization, it is important that more and more people, and especially young people coming from remote regions, can draw on important sources of culture.
I think you have surely given some online lecture or conference that you have recorded, so I ask you to spread your knowledge all over the world, helping many people to grow, through the IAEG platform (https://www.iaeg.info/ webinar and IAEG channel on YouTube).
Sure of your sensitivity towards these issues, send your webinars that you may have registered at the following address: giorgio.lollino@irpi.cnr.it.

This geologist found the oldest water on Earth — in a Canadian mine
Maclean's
When Barbara Sherwood Lollar sent water samples to a colleague at the University of Oxford for testing, she knew this was no ordinary water. The geochemist had spent much of her career wandering around some of the deepest mines in the world, finding and extracting water that was millions of years old.

St. Vincent hit by flooding, landslides following volcanic blasts
Reuters
Saint Vincent struggled to bounce back from major flooding after heavy rains following a series of volcanic eruptions this month inundated large swaths of the Caribbean island, as a senior official confirmed landslides in an interview.
The double whammy natural disaster began when La Soufriere volcano, near the northern tip of the island, belched large clouds of smoke beginning on April 9, blanketing surrounding buildings and cars with a thick layer of ash and causing thousands of residents to relocate.
