Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns
Welcome to the 204th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting environmental and engineering geologists around the world!
This week we combine the photo of the week with the report on the revival of the famous engineering geology field trip established many years ago by past IAEG President, Paul Marinos, and this year led by his son, Vassilis Marinos, one of our vice presidents of IAEG for Europe. The photos are wonderful! When you open up the newsletter, and there is not instantaneously the photo, click on the blue title of the field trip and up will come the incredible photos!
News items at the bottom include a bridge collapse in Pakistan and landslides/rockfalls in India, Alaska (USA), Japan and China.
We also include information on a big conference in Sri Lanka in June and a talk today in England by member Harry Saraglou. We also highlight the upcoming Minex Europe meeting this year!
Enjoy
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector

Revival of incredible engineering geology field trip in Europe
IAEG
Led by Professor Vassilis Marinos, the famous engineering geology field trip from Greece to Italy and France for 78 students from NTUA (National Technical University of Athens) in Greece happened this past 14-23 April, 2022. The field trip was dedicated to Emeritus Professors Paul Marinos and George Tsiambaos who established and executed this world famous field trip for many years. This year they had 78 students on a 10-day trip with 29 sponsors and a 800-page book to guide them. Congratulations to Professor Vassilis Marinos (also our Vice President for Europe for IAEG) for reviving this famous field trip in the post-COVID era.

SLGS Workshop on Eurocode 7 for Geotechnical Designs
SLGS
Sri Lankan Geotechnical Society (SLGS) is conducting a full day Workshop / Course on Eurocode 7 - EN 1997 (EC7): "Geotechnical Designs" on 16th June 2022 on Zoom.
“Eurocode 7-EN 1997 (EC 7): Geotechnical Design” describes how to design geotechnical structures, using the limit state design philosophy. EC 7 is applied to the geotechnical aspects of the design of buildings and civil engineering works, and it is concerned with the requirements for strength, stability, serviceability and durability of structures.
This workshop will cover an introduction to Eurocode 7 (both testing and design) concepts, differences between the design concepts of the earlier foundation code BS 8004 and EC 7, and the application of EC7 in shallow and deep foundations and retaining structures.

Electronic newsletter number 1 for 2022 from IAEG
IAEG
Four times a year, the home office of IAEG puts out a comprehensive newsletter for IAEG. Click on the link below to get this latest edition. The opening photo from the Mendoza Province of Argentina of the Payunia region (high density of volcanoes) is excellent. There are lots of news items from the executive committee of IAEG. The membership listings are only about one half of our membership as some large countries did not report membership numbers. There are nine pages of excellent news from national groups with lots of photos. Also, the number of upcoming conferences in our profession is incredible — see all of them!

Committee undertakes revision of bylaws and statutes for IAEG
IAEG
A working group has been set up by the Executive Committee to review the Bylaws and Statutes for IAEG. The committee has been working diligently and has their second major zoom meeting this week. The committee is composed of Vassilis Marinos (VP for Europe), Jean Hutchinson (VP for North America), Jorge Bejerman (VP for South America), Doug Johnson (VP for Oceana), Scott Burns (Past President) and Mark Eggers (consultant to the committee and past VP for Oceana). The committee is really working hard to update these two major items. Their report will go to the Executive Committee which will probably have a mid-year meeting in order to pass the recommendations onto the IAEG Council next October at their meeting. Good luck to this committee!

14th IAEG Congress postponed to September 2023
IAEG
In response to the COV1D19 pandemic and the need for social distancing, the local organizing
committee has to make the difficult decision to postpone the XIV Congress of the International
Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG XIV Congress 2022) to ensure the
safety and the well-being of multinational conference's attendees.
Following the regulations and advisories from governments and public health organizations banning
large gatherings of people, representatives from the international association for engineering
geology discussed the postponement. The final agreement is that the IAEG XIV Congress 2022 will be
shift from September 2022 to September 2023.
The full-length paper submission system will continue to open, and the paper reviewing work will
proceed as normal. The Extended Abstract submission system will open at the beginning of 2022. We
will announce the deadlines at the appropriate time. I hope that experts will continue to support
the conference actively.
The organizing committee of the XIV Congress of the International Association for Engineering
Geology and the Environment (IAEG XIV Congress 2022) looks forward to continuing to work with you
and sending you sincere thanks for your renewed and essential support. Apologize for the
inconvenience caused by the postponement of the meeting.
The annual ExCom and Council meetings will be arranged online this year. The election of President and Executive will also be arranged online at the proper time this year, not postponed. Judgement and competition of awards may be arranged before congress in 2023.

Spotlight on sustainable initiatives in geosynthetics
International Geosynthetics Society
Recycling, smarter use of energy and a shared drive toward a circular economy are spearheading environmental gains in geosynthetics globally.
Innovative companies are raising the bar on the use of recycled content in the manufacture of high-quality geosynthetic materials. Others are implementing new methods to offset carbon emissions, while still more are developing new techniques for the greener disposal of geosynthetics.

Submit a photo of engineering geology in action to the IAEG Connector
IAEG
The executive committee of IAEG at our recent meeting in Athens suggested we need to have a good photo at the beginning of every IAEG Connector about engineering geology. We have to be careful about publishing photos because of copyright laws. So, we are asking our members to submit photos that they will allow us to use in our newsletter. The photos will show the diversity of what we do! They can be photos of something geological or engineering geologists working on some project. The photographer will get credit for the photo in the newsletter.
If you would like to submit a photo for us to review, send it to Scott Burns, Editor at burnss@pdx.edu.

3rd JTC1 Workshop on Impact of global changes on landslide risk
NGI
The Joint Technical Committee on Natural Slopes and Landslides (JTC1) of FedICGS is delighted to invite you to join us at the 3rd JTC1 Workshop on Impact of global changes on landslide risk, to be held in Oslo, Norway, on 7-10 June 2023. Anthropogenic impacts and related climate change are unquestionably changing the landslide risk and impacting how we assess and manage the risk(s).
The aim of the workshop is to promote discussion between scientists and engineers on whether we are capable of predicting and quantifying the expected changes in landslide risk and how we could implement the knowledge gained from academic research on landslide risk management into practice.
