|Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG
Welcome to the 105th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
|Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
This week we present to you photos of our big medal award winners: Prof. Faquan Wu for the Hans Cloos Medal and Prof. Martin Culshaw for the Marcel Arnould Medal. They will receive them in Athens.
Our sister society, IAPG (Geoethics), has asked our members to fill out a survey on geoethics. The link is below.
We have an update on the Euroengeo meeting in Athens from the organizing committee too.
There are lots of news items at the bottom: new explanation for the Xe Nammoy hydropower complex failure in Laos a couple of years ago, a large landslide in Kent, England, and a gigantic rockfall on Yudi Peak in Alaska.
Updates on the many conferences around the world in our profession coming up are also listed below.
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
|Prof. Faquan Wu wins the Hans Cloos Medal and Prof. Martin Culshaw wins the Marcel Arnould Medal
The Executive Committee of IAEG finished voting this week on our two most prestigious awards for IAEG. President Rafig Azam would like to announce that Professor Faquan Wu of China will be the winner of the Hans Cloos Medal this year. Prof. Martin Culshaw of Great Britain has also won the Marcel Arnould Medal. Both will receive their medals in Athens in September at our regional conference. Congratulations to both winners.
|Geoscience community members are invited to fill out a survey from IAPG
The IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics has launched an international survey on geoethics.
The goal is to get some indications about the geoscience community's perception of the importance of the ethical and social aspects in geoscience research and practice.
All the members of the geoscience community are invited to fill in the questionnaire "Geoethics in the Geooscience" at:
Compilers can decide to fill in the questionnaire anonymously. In any case, no personal data or information related to private life are requested.
This international survey has been partially funded by the IUGS - International Union of Geological Sciences through the annual allocation to the IAPG.
A full 12 votes supporting the establishment of the Mongolia National Group have been received, so the proposal of establishing the Mongolia National Group has been approved by the Executive Committee with unanimous votes.
In response to COVID-19, Singapore has decided to postpone ARC13 to Nov. 15-19, 2021. ARC13 is co-organized by Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Geology (Singapore) and The Geological Society of Hong Kong. The organizers offer an ideal opportunity and platform for professionals from the international engineering geology community to exchange the latest experiences and ideas on engineering geology, particularly on the conference theme "Engineering Geology for Sustainable Resource and Infrastructure Development." In addition to the technical programs, we will organize short courses, workshops, technical visits, exhibitions, as well social programs. We will also offer attractive programs for young researchers and students, such as Young Engineering Geologist Session.
International Geological Congress
The government of India has reviewed the situation emerging out of the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). It considers the health and safety of the esteemed delegates and guests paramount. In view of this, the government has postponed the congress to a later date.

American Geosciences Institute
With many geoscience programs now needing to quickly shift to online teaching, the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) wants to make sure all faculty are aware of the 29 modules in the free-to-take Geoscience Online Learning Initiative (GOLI) platform, which is a joint effort of AGI, AIPG, SEPM, and ASBOG. GOLI courses range in duration from 1 to 10 hours in length, addressing a range of geoscience topics and skills from writing in the geosciences to geoethics to advanced environmental geochemistry, among others. These modules are ready to go and available for your students right now.
GOLI courses are always free-to-take. If a student wishes to earn continuing education credits for successfully completing the course and apply them towards licensing or other professional needs, they have the option to pay a nominal fee. Please visit https://goli.americangeosciences.org for more information about the program in general

The 3rd European Regional Conference of IAEG will be
hosted in Athens, Greece, by the IAEG National Group of Greece. The
conference will take place Sept. 20-24, 2020.
A European regional conference of IAEG was decided in the last council
in South Korea. The activation again of the IAEG regional
conference in Europe is a fundamental action for our region.
Unfortunately, since the regional conference of IAEG in Europe has
been inactive for almost 12 years, we do not have the chance to meet
in our region often (the last was five years ago in Torino). Considering
that almost half of the members and National Groups (NGs) of IAEG are
from European region, we hope that the initiative will become a stable
event, involving the scientific and professional community of the same
The conference will be organized with the collection of extensive
abstracts in order to reduce the complexity of the event due to the
limited time. More details about the 3rd European Regional Conference
will be available in few days on the conference website.
It is our pleasure also to announce that the Executive Office and
Council of IAEG for 2020 will be hosted in the occasion of the
conference in Athens.
The next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be moreover
presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.
As the unpleasant situation with COVID-19 is stabilizing across the world, Athens looks to be virus free in September! Moreover, safety measures are getting less every day.
It is a fact that traveling in Greece will be officially allowed in mid June from many European countries and hopefully in a few weeks, Athens will be linked with most major cities around the world!
Keeping that into consideration, we would like to give the opportunity to more of our colleagues submitting their abstract and eventually travel in Greece for this international IAEG conference, even though we have received a very satisfying number of submissions so far under these circumstances.
Therefore we have decided to extend the abstract submission until the 30th of June.
We are very optimistic about the future situation and we are still looking forward welcoming you in Athens, next September!
It is our pleasure also to announce that the meetings of Executive Committee and Council of IAEG for 2020, will be hosted in the occasion of the conference in Athens.
Finally, the IAEG “Hans Cloos” and “Marcel Arnould” medals will be awarded, while the next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.
Please contact us for any queries at email@example.com.
Be safe and looking forward seeing you in September.

ISSMGE (ISSMGE News & Information Circular)
On July 23, 2018, a saddle dam at the Xe Nammoy hydropower complex in Laos failed and breached, releasing 350 million cubic metres of water. The resultant flood inundated an area of about 46 square kilometres along the Vang Ngao River, a tributary of the Mekong River basin, causing massive damage.
Over the weekend the newspapers in the U.K. have been reporting two coastal landslides that occurred at Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent. These two landslides, which occurred at the same site, have damaged a house.
With thanks from me to loyal reader Hig for pointing it out, the Facebook page of Alpine Air Alaska has some stunning photographs, and a very cool video, of a long run out landslide that has recently occurred on Yudi Peak, near to Girdwood in Alaska.
