Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns
Welcome to the 208th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting environmental and engineering geologists around the world!
Our Vice President for South America, Dr. Jorge Bejerman, sent us great news that a new book has been published by one of the great engineering geologists of our profession, Dr. Sergio Mora Castro, in Argentina! Congratulations to Dr. Castro and our friends in Argentina.
Today was the Mediterranean lecture by Dr. Vassilis Marinos - we are sure that it went well!
Lots of news items are also found! A very interesting landslide in the quick clays happened in Quebec, Canada, a landslide in Argentina killed three people, and an interesting article on household radon (a major environmental geology hazard around the world) in Ireland.
Enjoy
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector

14th IAEG Congress postponed to September 2023
IAEG
In response to the COV1D19 pandemic and the need for social distancing, the local organizing
committee has to make the difficult decision to postpone the XIV Congress of the International
Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG XIV Congress 2022) to ensure the
safety and the well-being of multinational conference's attendees.
Following the regulations and advisories from governments and public health organizations banning
large gatherings of people, representatives from the international association for engineering
geology discussed the postponement. The final agreement is that the IAEG XIV Congress 2022 will be
shift from September 2022 to September 2023.
The full-length paper submission system will continue to open, and the paper reviewing work will
proceed as normal. The Extended Abstract submission system will open at the beginning of 2022. We
will announce the deadlines at the appropriate time. I hope that experts will continue to support
the conference actively.
The organizing committee of the XIV Congress of the International Association for Engineering
Geology and the Environment (IAEG XIV Congress 2022) looks forward to continuing to work with you
and sending you sincere thanks for your renewed and essential support. Apologize for the
inconvenience caused by the postponement of the meeting.
The annual ExCom and Council meetings will be arranged online this year. The election of President and Executive will also be arranged online at the proper time this year, not postponed. Judgement and competition of awards may be arranged before congress in 2023.

Submit a photo of engineering geology in action to the IAEG Connector
IAEG
The executive committee of IAEG at our recent meeting in Athens suggested we need to have a good photo at the beginning of every IAEG Connector about engineering geology. We have to be careful about publishing photos because of copyright laws. So, we are asking our members to submit photos that they will allow us to use in our newsletter. The photos will show the diversity of what we do! They can be photos of something geological or engineering geologists working on some project. The photographer will get credit for the photo in the newsletter.
If you would like to submit a photo for us to review, send it to Scott Burns, Editor at burnss@pdx.edu.

Why Washington's Rainier is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the US
Discover Magazine
When you try to look at the volcanoes of the United States with these lenses, a list can begin to form. The US Geological Survey publishes a "Threat Assessment" for US volcanoes, the last one in 2018. Using their rankings, Hawaii's Kīlauea is considered the most hazardous thanks to a mix of people living near the volcano and how frequently it erupts. Mount St. Helens comes in second because it is the only Cascade volcano to have erupted over the past 100 years.
