Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG

|
Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
|
Welcome to the 110th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
The big news this week is that the 3rd European Regional Engineering Geology Conference, Euroengeo2020, which was to be held in Athens, Greece in September, has been postponed to the new dates of April 8-12, 2021.
Second, our editors have been working hard for the last six years to improve the impact factor of our bulletin, starting with Prof. Martin Culshaw and now with our dynamic duo of Professor Resat Ulusay and Professor Louis Wong and the number has risen from 0.76 in 2014 to 3.04 in 2019! Congratulations to all of the authors and our editors!
Third, after the very successful YEG talk, a second one has been proposed for July 16, 2020. The Cities on Volcanoes 11 meeting has been converted to a hybrid meeting (in person and virtual) in September.
Fourth, we have the links to the latest newsletters sent this week for our sister societies, IGS and ISSMGE.
And lastly, we have had an incredible week of geological disasters! First the Jade Mine disaster in Myanmar which killed 160 (most this year for a landslide), the Ashikita Landslides in Japan, the Sikkim landslide, The Dawn of Hope Peat Slide, and the Achoma landslide in Peru!
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG

The 3rd European Regional Conference of IAEG will be
hosted in Athens, Greece, by the IAEG National Group of Greece. The
conference will be postponed until spring 2021.
A European regional conference of IAEG was decided in the last council
in South Korea. The activation again of the IAEG regional
conference in Europe is a fundamental action for our region.
Unfortunately, since the regional conference of IAEG in Europe has
been inactive for almost 12 years, we do not have the chance to meet
in our region often (the last was five years ago in Torino). Considering
that almost half of the members and National Groups (NGs) of IAEG are
from European region, we hope that the initiative will become a stable
event, involving the scientific and professional community of the same
area.
The conference will be organized with the collection of extensive
abstracts in order to reduce the complexity of the event due to the
limited time. More details about the 3rd European Regional Conference
will be available in few days on the conference website.
It is our pleasure also to announce that the Executive Office and
Council of IAEG for 2020 will be hosted in the occasion of the
conference in Athens.
The next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be moreover
presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.

MINEX Europe
Greetings from MINEX Europe Forum! We hope you are safe and well.
Founded in 2015, MINEX Europe Forum has been focusing on technological, investment and market developments across Europe’s mining industry. The previous in-person MINEX Europe Forums have been held in Austria, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria.
From June 3 - July 2, MINEX Forum is holding a series of online events focusing on European mining industry developments in the current and post COVID-19 pandemic world. In the current environment of rapid changes, it is even more vital than ever before to discuss these changes and openly communicate strategies of adjusting to the new business, economic and social realities with peers from the mining companies as well as global investors, regulators, technological companies, academic communities, media, and other stakeholder groups.
We are delighted to share with you the materials of the Eastern and Central Europe edition of MINEX Europe Online Forum and to invite you to participate in MINEX Northern & Western Europe Forum on July 1 and MINEX Southern Europe edition on July 2.

International Geological Congress
Given the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears unlikely that the 36th IGC can be held as rescheduled to November 2020. Accordingly, the Local Organizing Committee requested and the IGC Committee (IGCC) approved revised dates of 16-21 August 2021. Scheduling was constrained by the limited availability of the venue site in New Delhi in 2021. The IUGS Executive Committee and its constituent groups will work hard to ensure the success of the rescheduled Congress.
Under consideration by the IUGS Executive Committee is the call for an extraordinary session of the IUGS-IGC Council, possibly to be held in Paris, France in early November for the purpose of completing essential business, such as the election of a new executive committee. If held, the agenda and number of participants will be limited with most delegates participating via teleconferencing. Inquiries are just being made. No announcement will be made until facilities, location, and dates are confirmed and approved by the EC.
