|Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG
Welcome to the 113th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
|Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
IAEG is part of FedIGS (Federation of International GeoSocieties), and our annual meeting will be virtual on September 10, 2020, instead of face to face in Warsaw, Poland. The president, past president and secretary general of each organization meet to discuss ways of cooperating with each organization.
With the monsoon rains continuing to hit Asia, two major landslides in China have blocked major rivers. Also, a landslide in a coal mine has trapped a miner in India.
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
A new BOEG issue has just been released. Please click here to see a list of the latest papers in our bulletin.
We are delighted to report to the Committee that the recently released 2019 impact factor of BOEG reaches a record high of 3.041. It increases by 0.903 (42%) as compared with that of 2018. The IFs of the recent 6 years with their impact factors are tabulated below.
For your information, the 2019 impact factor of a journal is calculated by dividing the number of citations in 2019 to items published in 2017-2018 by the number of citable items in 2017-2018.
BOEG is now in the top 10 for the discipline of “Engineering, Geological” based on the IF. Please refer to the attached file for the detailed information.
The 3rd European Regional Conference of IAEG will be
hosted in Athens, Greece, by the IAEG National Group of Greece. The
conference will be postponed until spring 2021.
A European regional conference of IAEG was decided in the last council
in South Korea. The activation again of the IAEG regional
conference in Europe is a fundamental action for our region.
Unfortunately, since the regional conference of IAEG in Europe has
been inactive for almost 12 years, we do not have the chance to meet
in our region often (the last was five years ago in Torino). Considering
that almost half of the members and National Groups (NGs) of IAEG are
from European region, we hope that the initiative will become a stable
event, involving the scientific and professional community of the same
The conference will be organized with the collection of extensive
abstracts in order to reduce the complexity of the event due to the
limited time. More details about the 3rd European Regional Conference
will be available in few days on the conference website.
It is our pleasure also to announce that the Executive Office and
Council of IAEG for 2020 will be hosted in the occasion of the
conference in Athens.
The next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be moreover
presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.
After careful consideration, and in light of the ongoing coronavirus healthy and financial developments, we are postponing EUROENGEO2020 to mid spring 2021. Rescheduling the event will enable us to provide the experience that our participants, sponsors and faculty members expect and deserve.
The new dates are April 8-12, 2021.
At the 2019 Annual International Conference of the Association, which doubled as the 2nd
Africa Regional Congress of the IAEG, elections were held for a new executive council. The
inauguration ceremony for the elected officers was held on March 20 at the Prof.Omar Rahaman Mini-Conference Hall, Department of Geology, University of Ibadan,
|Prof. Faquan Wu wins the Hans Cloos Medal and Prof. Martin Culshaw wins the Marcel Arnould Medal
The Executive Committee of IAEG finished voting this week on our two most prestigious awards for IAEG. President Rafig Azam would like to announce that Professor Faquan Wu of China will be the winner of the Hans Cloos Medal this year. Prof. Martin Culshaw of Great Britain has also won the Marcel Arnould Medal. Both will receive their medals in Athens in September at our regional conference. Congratulations to both winners.
|Geoscience community members are invited to fill out a survey from IAPG
The IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics has launched an international survey on geoethics.
The goal is to get some indications about the geoscience community's perception of the importance of the ethical and social aspects in geoscience research and practice.
All the members of the geoscience community are invited to fill in the questionnaire "Geoethics in the Geooscience" at:
Compilers can decide to fill in the questionnaire anonymously. In any case, no personal data or information related to private life are requested.
This international survey has been partially funded by the IUGS - International Union of Geological Sciences through the annual allocation to the IAPG.
In response to COVID-19, Singapore has decided to postpone ARC13 to Nov. 15-19, 2021. ARC13 is co-organized by Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Geology (Singapore) and The Geological Society of Hong Kong. The organizers offer an ideal opportunity and platform for professionals from the international engineering geology community to exchange the latest experiences and ideas on engineering geology, particularly on the conference theme "Engineering Geology for Sustainable Resource and Infrastructure Development." In addition to the technical programs, we will organize short courses, workshops, technical visits, exhibitions, as well social programs. We will also offer attractive programs for young researchers and students, such as Young Engineering Geologist Session.
International Geological Congress
Given the current status of the COVID-19 pandemic, it appears unlikely that the 36th IGC can be held as rescheduled to November 2020. Accordingly, the Local Organizing Committee requested and the IGC Committee (IGCC) approved revised dates of 16-21 August 2021. Scheduling was constrained by the limited availability of the venue site in New Delhi in 2021. The IUGS Executive Committee and its constituent groups will work hard to ensure the success of the rescheduled Congress.
Under consideration by the IUGS Executive Committee is the call for an extraordinary session of the IUGS-IGC Council, possibly to be held in Paris, France in early November for the purpose of completing essential business, such as the election of a new executive committee. If held, the agenda and number of participants will be limited with most delegates participating via teleconferencing. Inquiries are just being made. No announcement will be made until facilities, location, and dates are confirmed and approved by the EC.

The Landslide Blog
Heavy monsoon rainfall continues to drive landslide losses across Nepal. As in all disasters, a key aspect of an appropriate response is highly quality spatial data. In the summer of 2019 the National Emergency Operation Centre, a part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, launched a new disaster management portal to provide high quality data.
A worker was trapped under the debris following a landslide at a coal mine in Chhattisgarh's Korba district, the police said.
The incident took place at Kusmunda open-cast coal mine of South Eastern Coalfields Limited when workers were pumping out rainwater from the mining area, said a police official.
On July 20, a very large landslide occurred in the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hubei Province, China, blocking the Quinjiang River. The Xinhua report for this event indicates a volume of about 10 million cubic meters. The main valley was blocked and a barrier lake developed, although it has now breached safely.
The Landslide Blog
Xinhua has published a photo gallery of a large, valley-blocking landslide located close to Liujing village, in Wulong district, Chongqing, China. The landslide has partially blocked the the Yancang River, a tributary of Wujiang River, and a lake has developed, although at this stage the size of barrier is not large.
