Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns and Rafig Azzam, IAEG

|
Prof. Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG
|
Welcome to the 123rd IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting engineering geologists around the world!
This week we highlight two elders in our profession. First, we say Happy 96th Birthday to Professor Heitfeld of Germany (summarized by President Rafig Azzam), and we give tribute to the incredible career of Professor Valdiya of India for his work on the Himalayan Mountains (summarized by Prof. Ranjan Dahal of Nepal).
Second, we highlight a wonderful upcoming geomechanics symposium sponsored by ARMA/DGS/SEG.
There are lots of news items in our field, too! We mention the potential megatsunami in a fiord in Alaska, a Russian volcano that is developing a bulge and a possible eruption, a disappearing Greenland ice sheet, an incredible flood in the French Alps, and interpretations of an 8th century earthquake in Israel.
Enjoy the issue!
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG

YEG has new chair and new active agenda!
IAEG
As the Incoming YEG Chair, I would like to inform you about the progress of YEG actions as the new academic year has already started. After the successful initiation of the monthly "e-YEG" day with fruitful presentations from a Senior and a YEG representative, we just kicked off a new section called "Get to know us better." The latter comprise a section of providing an interview procedure for our YEG and IAEG members. Based on a number of well structured and predefined questions the YEG representative has the chance to present his/her profile to the public via our social media and website. The procedure has been initiated with the interview of YEG Incoming Chair (Stratis Karantanellis) and every 20 days approximately, a new interview will be added to our media starting from the YEG committee. This action should be a prominent initiative for many young Engineering Geologists to get to know our members and give them the opportunity to contact the interviewees for more information on the topic that they are working on.
I would like to ask you if you could diffuse the above action via the Newsletter and IAEG Connector in order to enhance its visibility.
For any further questions I am at your disposal.
Kind regards,
Stratis Karantanellis

IAEG
After the postponement of the EUROENGEO2020 to mid Spring 2021 (8th to 12th April 2021) the organizing committee of the conference has decided to take advantage of the extra time and call for FULL PAPER SUBMISSION.
The full paper submission is optional. There are now two submission options:
The extended abstract submission and the full paper submission (submissions will be open till the 15th of December). The submission and revision dates will be tight, and we are seeking the cooperation of all authors.

Bulletin of Engineering Geology and the Environment celebrates 50th Anniversary
IAEG
We are excited to celebrate the 50th year of our Bulletin for IAEG! Each year it keeps getting better and better! Our two wonderful editors, Professors Resat Ulusay and Louis Wong, have summarized the 50-year history of our bulletin. There is a link below where you can access that superb report! Many thanks to all of the contributors and the editors for those 50 years!

3rd EUROENGEO2020 is postponed until spring 2021
IAEG
The 3rd European Regional Conference of IAEG will be
hosted in Athens, Greece, by the IAEG National Group of Greece. The
conference will be postponed until spring 2021.
A European regional conference of IAEG was decided in the last council
in South Korea. The activation again of the IAEG regional
conference in Europe is a fundamental action for our region.
Unfortunately, since the regional conference of IAEG in Europe has
been inactive for almost 12 years, we do not have the chance to meet
in our region often (the last was five years ago in Torino). Considering
that almost half of the members and National Groups (NGs) of IAEG are
from European region, we hope that the initiative will become a stable
event, involving the scientific and professional community of the same
area.
The conference will be organized with the collection of extensive
abstracts in order to reduce the complexity of the event due to the
limited time. More details about the 3rd European Regional Conference
will be available in few days on the conference website.
It is our pleasure also to announce that the Executive Office and
Council of IAEG for 2020 will be hosted in the occasion of the
conference in Athens.
The next Richard Wolters Prize competition for 2020 will be moreover
presented by IAEG at the occasion of the conference.

Rest and Be Thankful: The cause of the landslide problems
The Landslide Blog
In recent years a key strategic highway in Scotland, the A83, has repeatedly been blocked by landslides at the rather beautifully named Rest and Be Thankful. This road provides the main access from north of Glasgow to a large part of western Scotland.

Before plants or animals existed, this 250,000-ton rock fell in the mud — here's how we know
National Geographic
Rain and winds buffeted the northwestern Scottish coast as Zachary Killingback inspected a rock stuck in the mud. It wasn’t just any old stone: Weighing in at nearly a quarter of a million tons and measuring longer than a jumbo jet, the boulder had careened to its position some 1.2 billion years ago, which means it may be the oldest rockfall yet found on land.

The specter of a mega-tsunami in Alaska
Earth Observatory
While kayaking in Barry Arm fjord in June 2019, Valisa Higman, an artist-in-residence at Alaska’s Chugach National Forest, noticed some odd fractures on a cliff overlooking the fjord. Curious if the slope might be in the process of collapsing, she emailed photos to her brother, Bretwood Higman.

The worst is yet to come for the Greenland ice sheet
Nature
The Greenland ice sheet is losing ice at an increasing rate, owing to rising air and ocean temperatures. Melting of the ice sheet is currently increasing global mean sea level by about 0.7 millimetres per year, but models predict3 that rates could reach between 2 and 7 mm per year by 2100.

Whaleback rises at a Russian volcano
Discover Magazine
Shiveluch on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. Usually its eruptions are dramatic explosions, but over the last few weeks, it has started erupting ... a thing. It looks like an alien structure rising out of the ground, but a what we call a whaleback is a special kind of lava dome made by a volcanic eruption.

Ancient ruins reveal 8th century earthquake in sea of Galilee
Eos
Archaeological features show evidence of a strong earthquake in northern Israel in the mid-8th century, although the plate boundary responsible hasn’t produced any large shakes since seismologists began measuring the area about a century ago. The discovery shows that the Sea of Galilee region may have a higher risk of strong earthquakes than currently believed.
