Special Welcome Message from Scott Burns
Welcome to the 183rd IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter connecting environmental and engineering geologists around the world!
This week we have an excellent photo of Melamchi Bazar, Nepal where a large debris flow buried part of the town this past June and August. We thank Professor Ranjan Kumar Dahal for the excellent photo!
The editors of our wonderful bulletin have sent the list of the papers in the last issue of this year which is a special issue on aggregates. Be sure to check them out. In the sister society section, we have the latest links to the publications from IUGS and ISSMGE.
The incredible geo-disaster of this week was the eruption of the Semeru Volcano in Indonesia where at least 22 people are dead. Catastrophic flooding also hit Hawaii in the central Pacific Ocean. India is developing a new landslide warning system. Two other disasters were landslides with a mine tailings failure in Peru and the Mira Mar landslide in Australia.
Enjoy
Scott Burns, now Past President, IAEG, and editor, IAEG Connector, and Rafig Azzam, President, IAEG

Follow up of Melamchi Disaster, North of Kathmandu, Nepal

The photo (taken on December 5, 2021) shows the debris flow deposit in Melamchi Bazar area. The disaster happened in series of events from June 15 and August 1, 2021. The main town was buried during the event. Later, people cleaned the buried sediment and now are using their houses. We can see the partly buried photo of residential houses and hotels. The main economy of this area depends on Himalayan herbal trades and tourism. Most of people collect the Himalayan Cordyceps sinesis (YARSHA GUMBA) in the higher elevation and sell it to run their livelihood well in the town. At present, Dr. Ranjan Kumar Dahal (coordinator of IAEG national group of Nepal) and his team (includes Dr. Manita Timilsina, Ms. Chandani Bhandari, Ms. Ajeena Dahal and Mr. Om Prasad Dhakal) are now working for rehabilitation and restoration of the river and Melamchi Bazar.

Spotlight on sustainable initiatives in geosynthetics
International Geosynthetics Society
Recycling, smarter use of energy and a shared drive toward a circular economy are spearheading environmental gains in geosynthetics globally.
Innovative companies are raising the bar on the use of recycled content in the manufacture of high-quality geosynthetic materials. Others are implementing new methods to offset carbon emissions, while still more are developing new techniques for the greener disposal of geosynthetics.

Submit a photo of engineering geology in action to the IAEG Connector
IAEG
The executive committee of IAEG at our recent meeting in Athens suggested we need to have a good photo at the beginning of every IAEG Connector about engineering geology. We have to be careful about publishing photos because of copyright laws. So, we are asking our members to submit photos that they will allow us to use in our newsletter. The photos will show the diversity of what we do! They can be photos of something geological or engineering geologists working on some project. The photographer will get credit for the photo in the newsletter.
If you would like to submit a photo for us to review, send it to Scott Burns, Editor at burnss@pdx.edu.

Indian Society of Engineering Geology sponsors EGCON 2021: Recent Advances in Geotechnics, December 9-11, 2021, virtual format
IAEG
The Indian Society of Engineering Geology (ISEG), the Indian National Group of International Association for Engineering Geology and The Environment (IAEG), is continuously engaged in dissemination of knowledge amongst the professionals. The ISEG (www.isegindia.org) is regularly publishing its biennial journal — Journal of Engineering Geology (www.joegindia.com) and newsletter. During the COVID-19 pandemic period, ISEG has continued this endeavor by hosting events on virtual platforms.
Presently, the ISEG is being headed by Sh. A. K. Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited — the largest hydropower utility of India. Under the able guidance of Sh. A.K. Singh, the Indian national group is progressing fast, and in the last one year we have been able to add more than 80 life members to the ISEG.
ISEG, in association with NHPC, is going to organize an International Conference on “Recent Advances in Geotechnics (EGCON-2021)” from December 9-11, 2021, on the virtual platform.
