A Special Message From Scott Burns, President, IAEG
Welcome to our 30th IAEG Connector, the electronic newsletter that connects engineering geologists around the world.
First, I would like to introduce Jorge Bejerman who is our new vice president for South America. He has spent many years as a consultant and also working for governmental agencies in Argentina in environmental and engineering geology. He is a member of the executive committee of that Argentina National Group of Engineering Geologists. He is also the Chief Editor of their publication of the Journal of Geology Applied to Engineering and the Environment for Argentina!
Also, I want to highlight the upcoming EGU meeting in Vienna, Austria, from April 7-12, 2019. This is the big European meeting every year, and three of our committees are involved in sessions that I have highlighted. One of our sister societies is IAPG (Geoethics), and they are sponsoring two sessions. We also have an active landslide group that is sponsoring the "Rapid Mass Movements" sessions. Our Heritage Stones group is also very involved in the planning of the Heritage Stones sessions. All are listed below.
Also, this past week has been an active landslide week around the world. I have highlighted over five major landslides in the news section on these landslides.
The home office for IAEG Connector will be closed for the next two weeks, so we will be running top IAEG Connectors from the past 30 issues. We will resume our normal IAEG Connectors on Jan. 9, 2019.
Happy Holidays to everyone around the world!
Enjoy, Scott Burns, President, IAEG

Geology Applied to Engineering represents a thorough and up-to-date textbook for courses in Applied PhysicaI Geology, Geology for Engineers and Engineering Geology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It
contains appropriate information for geologists and engineers who are involved in designing and constructing
engineering structures, as all structures are located either on the Earth or in the Earth, or composed of earth
materials. This textbook also provides the fundamentals of subject material included in the Examination for
Professional Licensure of Geologists, a growing need for geologists who work in the public sector.
The Korean Society of Engineering Geology
The Korean Society of Engineering Geology and Korea national group of International
Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment would like to present the 12th Asian Regional Conference at Jeju Booyoung Hotel & Resort Sept. 23-27, 2019, in Jeju Island, Korea.
We look forward to welcoming all of you here in Korea.

The Annual Conference SAGEEP 2019 is in Portland in March 2019 and features a full parallel Geohazards Conference including hazards for manmade structures like dams and levees and also a parallel Shallow Marine and Coastal Geophysics Conference, both of which should be of interest to AEG. AEG participation/contribution would be most welcomed.

Madeira Island News
The journal reports that there was a significant landslip between the cable car at Rancho and the viewpoint at Cabo Girão, above Câmara de Lobos, which apparently startled the local population.
Although there were initially fears that there may have been people injured from the incident, due to the rocks and dust falling onto an area where there is a sea walk accessing agricultural land beneath Cabo Girão, there was no physical or material damage subsequently reported.
