The landslide-induced TGV (high speed train) accident in France
The Landslide Blog
From March 11: 5 March 2020, a TGV (high speed train) struck a landslide between Strasburg and Vendenheim in the Bas-Rhin area of France. The train remained upright, not least because it appears that it was a glancing blow rather than a direct collision, but 22 people were injured, one seriously.

The Alta Quick Clay Landslide: further footage
AGU
From June 10: This new film provides some additional footage of the site prior to the main slide and some drone footage of the aftermath. In both cases the imagery is very revealing.
The early footage was also filmed by Jan Egil Bakkerby, who shot the main video that went viral yesterday. It shows the site shortly before the main failure.

The lost continent of Zealandia hides clues to the Ring of Fire's birth
Live Science
From Feb. 19: The hidden undersea continent of Zealandia underwent an upheaval at the time of the birth of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Awakening volcanic region in Iceland 'could cause disruption for centuries'
The Guardian
From April 15: Volcanic activity is escalating in a region of Iceland that has not erupted for 800 years, with scientists warning it could cause disruption for centuries to come.
Since Jan. 21, the Reykjanes peninsula southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, has experienced more than 8,000 earthquakes and about 10 centimeters of land uplift due to magma intrusions underground.

Cobriza, Peru: Another significant tailings dam failure
The Landslide Blog
From July 17: Another significant tailings dam failure occurred at Cobriza in Peru July 10. Cobriza is a copper mine — interestingly, some reports indicate that "the concentrator was operated at a rate quite below its capacity due to lack of mine ore and lately (2016 and 2017) due to lack of capacity in the tailings dam."

Major landslides caused by agricultural irrigation in Peru
The Landslide Blog
From Jan. 22: It is well-established that irrigation by farmers can be the cause of landslides, especially in areas with low rainfall totals. A very nice study was published in Nature Geoscience that uses a long archive of satellite data to examine landsliding on river cliffs in Peru. The study area, the Vitor and Siguas valleys in southern Peru, is hyper-arid, which has meant that historically agriculture has been limited to the flood plains of the incised river channels.
