The Department of Homeland Security has selected Powered for Patients as one of ten organizations to lead innovative research and development initiatives as part of the DHS 2018 National Infrastructure Protection Plan (NIPP) Security & Resilience Challenge. Through the DHS project, Powered for Patients and its technology partner, Talus Analytics, will create a prototype to consolidate data streams from various fault detection and automated reporting systems connected to emergency power at hospitals and other critical healthcare facilities throughout the country. This consolidated data stream of different technology company data feeds will provide government officials and utilities with a single dashboard through which to view and assess real time threats to emergency power during extended power outages. The success of this project will depend on the active engagement of many stakeholders. To learn more about the project, view a list of current stakeholders, and find out how to participate in various stakeholder categories, visit the Powered for Patients website.

Every man-made thing that burned, burned all the way.
That is the powerful first impression driving into Paradise after America's deadliest wildfire in 100 years.
There are a few scorched-but-recognizable husks of gas stations or curio shops but most of the 14,000 homes that caught an ember burned with such blowtorch intensity, only railings and the fireplace remain.

California's building codes are not keeping up with the severe, wind-driven wildfires that are becoming the norm.

Our current approach to wildfire is killing us. Instead of making communities fire safe, we’re mostly trying to manage habitat to suppress fire, and it’s failing to protect our lives and our property. Bureaucratic inertia and hubris are preventing needed change. Until the public understands the true nature of wildfire and demands the same of government, the staggering losses will continue to mount.

When a massive earthquake and tsunami hit the eastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant failed, leaking radioactive material into the atmosphere and water. IAEM is offering the latest in its Thursday Learning Series webinars, “Budgeting for Disasters: Challenges and Innovative Practices in Times of Uncertainty,” on Jan. 7, 2019, 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST. In recent years, natural disasters have increased in the United States in terms of frequency, severity, and cost. For example, FEMA’s Public Assistance Grant Program, the largest source of federal disaster assistance to state and local governments, increased by 212 percent from 1996 to 2015. Since state and local governments bear part of the cost of federally declared disasters, governments at all levels are spending more on response and recovery. Panel members representing state and local government will discuss actions their jurisdictions have taken to manage volatile, increased costs through innovative budgeting practices. Audience members will be encouraged to share best practices as well as recent actions taken in their own jurisdictions. Register online.
