Federal prosecutors once regarded Jesse Curtis Morton as a threat to national security. The FBI said the pro-jihadist website he helped found, RevolutionMuslim.com, inspired a number of terrorist plots. On that website, militant training videos, bomb-making instructions, praise for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and chat rooms for discussions among members created a multi-media stew of toxic content, they said.

Twelve million French children have gone back to school with new security measures in place because of recent jihadist attacks.
Pupils will be taught to hide, escape and help each other and there will be three security drills a year including simulated attacks.
Security is also being beefed up at the entrance to school buildings.
The new measures coincide with major education reforms which have come in despite widespread protests.

The most important driver for the physical retail security market is the need of retailers to safeguard their property, staff and customers.
Retailers also use physical security as a deterrent to prevent shoplifting and crime. Loss prevention and security issues are continuously gaining more importance. Retailers also view loss prevention as an essential management tool. Even though retailers spend significant sums of money on physical security solutions, they have still not been able to control the rising trend in shrinkage. Retail shrinkage increases with increasing retail sales.

William Santana Li imagines a future where robots will keep Americans safe. Communities, he dreams, will take security into their own hands by investing in wheeled machines that patrol streets, sidewalks and schools — instantly alerting residents via a mobile app of intruders or criminal behavior.
"What if we could crowd-source security?" said Li, co-founder and chief executive of a robotics company, Knightscope, that hopes to eventually do just that.

In today's hypervigilant era, terrorism fears have led to an unusual phenomenon recently in which two major airports have been evacuated following false reports of active shooters. With everyone on edge following terrorist incidents and mass shootings, how can security officials in airports ensure the anxiety of the traveling public doesn't lead to a dangerous incident of mass panic, subsequent injury and possibly even death?

Two years ago the Transportation Security Administration offered $15,000 to anybody — literally anybody — who could come up with an idea to speed up airport security. It awarded the prize to somebodies for something. Who knows. They wouldn't say who won or for which idea, but since we're here two years later with longer wait times than ever, it's fair to say it hasn't lived up to the groundbreaking ideals of that call to action.

According to new data from IHS Markit, the installed base of surveillance cameras in North America is expected to grow from just 33 million in 2012 to nearly 62 million by the end of 2016. The research firm notes, however, that the security camera product mix is changing.
For example, network cameras, which accounted for only 17 percent of the total installed base in 2012, are expected to account for 34 percent of the market by the end of this year. In addition, high-definition CCTV cameras, including HD-CVI, AHD and HD-TVI, have seen a significant rise in adoption, growing from less than 1 percent of the installed base in 2012 to almost 13 percent in 2016.

Cities are getting smarter. Urban centers are now spending big on technologies such as predictive traffic control, mobile app-enabled parking, intelligent energy management and machine-to-machine communication powered by connected infrastructure. Sounds like a blueprint for utopia, right?
But there's a problem. Just as cybercriminals turned their attention to user credentials such as passwords and email addresses — the most stolen digital commodities in 2015, according to Dark Reading — and upped their mobile malware game, smart cities come along and offer a new opportunity: data sabotage.

In the retail business, nothing is more important than keeping customers happy. Nothing, that is, except keeping them safe.
It’s every retailer's worst nightmare: a data breach that leaves the brand’s reputation in tatters and destroys consumer trust. Just ask Target, whose 2013 data breach affecting 40 million customers led to a class-action lawsuit and a $39 million settlement.
