IAPSC
We are delighted to announce that IAPSC Member Jim Clark was selected as the winner of this year's US Outstanding Security Performance Award (OSPA) for Outstanding Security Consultant, presented on September 27th in Dallas, TX.
This OSPA recognizes the security consultant — individual or company — who demonstrates outstanding performance in any aspect of security consulting. Consultants often play a key role in security in offering expertise and insight which can transform the quality of service, product or system that is offered. It recognizes the existence of distinct skill sets and crucially the ways these are harnessed and managed to make a difference to security strategy and/or practice.

IAPSC
IAPSC provides a free RFP (Request for Proposal) distribution service to help connect prospective clients with our member security consultants. All current members receive an email notice each time a new RFP is posted. Then they may log in to the website to view the details and contact the client directly if they are interested in the opportunity.
Below is a flyer that was distributed at the ASIS 2017 Seminar & Exhibits to encourage attendees to utilize the portal to distribute their RFPs through the IAPSC. You can also help IAPSC to spread the word (and bring in more business opportunities for you, our membership) by sharing this flyer with your colleagues and network.

The Associated Press, USA Today and Vice News have failed in their attempt to reveal the hacking tool the FBI used to access San Bernardino terrorist Syed Farook's iPhone. Judge Tanya Chutkan denied their request in a summary judgment ruling issued late on September 30th, arguing that the risks involved in naming the vendor (and thus the tool) or the price paid are too serious to honor a Freedom of Information Act request. It would make the company a target for retaliatory hacks and exploits that it likely couldn't withstand, Judge Chutkan said, while the price would tell "adversaries" how readily the FBI can use the tool in the future.

The incident is the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. But authorities were quick to point out that they were not labeling the incident an act of terrorism.

Identity theft coverage stands out from other benefits offerings because of the critical need to shield employees' personal and financial information from cyber theft. Widespread data breaches, like those seen in the spread of WannaCry ransomware in May and, more recently, the Equifax security breach, will only drive up the need for cyber protection.

We are entering a period of time when we are going to see an uptick in the number of security threats, both physical and in cyberspace. There is an increasing global unrest. Over the past few months what we’ve seen electorally, in the U.S., but also in Europe and in other parts of the world, has been a manifestation of that. This has also been reflected in physical violence and inspired acts of terrorism, as we have tragically seen in Charlottesville and Barcelona. We will see this manifest online, too.

The year hurricanes Katrina and Wilma devastated Florida and Louisiana, Bill Begal's property restoration and cleanup business took in more than $10 million in revenue. An average year, by comparison, could bring in up to $4 million — not bad for a company bootstrapped inside a family dry-cleaning store more than 20 years ago.
