And it will be their job to help America prepare for whatever comes next, from enemies abroad to natural disasters at home. Ramsay is the coordinator — and first faculty member — of the new Homeland Security program at the University of New Hampshire at Manchester. The "brave souls" who have signed up for this first fall semester of classes, he said, will graduate in four years with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed across a broad array of careers, such as law enforcement, risk analysis, emergency management and cybersecurity.

A new survey of 500 buildings across seven major U.S. cities has shown that building operators prioritize safety and security over sustainability and productivity. According to the survey, which was conducted by Honeywell and KRC Research, despite safety being of greater concern, the vast majority of building managers (82 percent) nevertheless agree that there is incredible benefit from green initiatives. As a result of prioritization though, half of those surveyed (53 percent) said their buildings are not equipped with the right technology to maximize energy efficiency and sustainability.
