January Member Spotlight: Julianna Mathers
When did you realize that you wanted to become an interior designer?
My mother is a fine artist, seamstress and designer, and I grew up in aesthetic environments, fabric stores, and amidst renovations. My love for beautiful interiors was established at a young age. As a young woman, I worked in the corporate marketing world but loved decorating my tiny apartments and devouring shelter magazines, reading them cover to cover. As a young mom, I began working for an ASID architect and designer, and that's when I realized I wanted to combine my personal passion for interiors with my business experience and turn it into a vocation. My work started organically with friends asking for help with renovations and decorating. It grew from there.

Top designing styles and you
Ginger Curtis writes: Design styles — where to start and where to end? Journey deep into Instagram, Houzz or Pinterest, and many of us come up for air wondering how to articulate our style. How does our home decor affect our mental health?
Longevity
Your surroundings reflect you, and you reflect on your surroundings. The surrounding energy eventually contributes to the energy you give out.
For that very reason, experts suggest maintaining a clean and sorted environment, if not anything else. As the most basic standard of all, it will set your mind straight and develop a clearer view of things.

9 interior design trends to note for the year ahead
Vogue
The most notable interior design trend in 2021? An obsession with comfort. After a year of lockdown, our fantasy homes are defined by warmth, coziness and a distinct sense of personality. In terms of color palettes, muted neutrals are giving way to earth tones and bold hues (emerald and cobalt are both set to be popular). Additionally, when it comes to furniture, vintage is the way forward.

Modern home decor is moving out to make room for more comfortable trends — and it's about time
Insider
Samantha Grindell writes: In my childhood home, there were roosters everywhere.
No, my home wasn't filled with live animals; my mom paid homage to the fluffy creatures with our decor. We had roosters on pillows, rooster-shaped vases and even a chalkboard with a rooster trim. It might sound kitschy to have livestock decor be a focal point of your home, but the animal print was homey and inviting, fitting perfectly with the oversized red couch I watched TV on and the light-wood kitchen table where I did my homework.
