A 1930s historical home, tastefully updated by Nicole Yee
As is the case with so many homes, a renovation in the 80s had removed quite a bit of charm from this Oakland home. However, the main concern was the function — or rather, the lack of function altogether. The clients, a family of four, hired designer Nicole Yee to thoughtfully transform the space to better suit their lifestyle. With the addition of custom cabinets in each room, now everything has a place, removing the opportunity for clutter to gather.

January Member Spotlight: Julianna Mathers
When did you realize that you wanted to become an interior designer?
My mother is a fine artist, seamstress and designer, and I grew up in aesthetic environments, fabric stores, and amidst renovations. My love for beautiful interiors was established at a young age. As a young woman, I worked in the corporate marketing world but loved decorating my tiny apartments and devouring shelter magazines, reading them cover to cover. As a young mom, I began working for an ASID architect and designer, and that's when I realized I wanted to combine my personal passion for interiors with my business experience and turn it into a vocation. My work started organically with friends asking for help with renovations and decorating. It grew from there.

How one interior designer is helping the homeless with her One Percent Project
Good News Network
Non-profits need profits, and one Portland interior designer has found a subtle, effective way to fund projects looking to alleviate the Oregon homelessness epidemic. A short-hand equivalent of when grocery stores ask shoppers to round up and give the surplus to charity, she's adding a 1% line item on every client invoice as a way of generating money for non-profits, and other interior designers in the state have been joining her.

Statement home decor ideas that favor personality over trends
The Zoe Report
There is always a time and a place for minimalism, but according to interior design experts, 2021 is all about creating impact and setting your space apart from others. One way to do it? Incorporating statement home decor. However, what's different about the most current ways to create a dramatic focal point in any room is tailoring it to your personality and interests, as opposed to simply following the trends.

What's next for interior design and decor in 2021
Furniture Today
Before the pandemic, much of our days were spent at work, punctuated by commutes, and more often than not, we'd have plans after work, too. So, when the pandemic hit, it was a little alarming for Americans to realize how little living was actually done at home.

Tips for achieving the top 2021 home trend: Warm interior design
Longview News-Journal
Change is on the horizon as 2021 is poised to be a transition year for home design. Expect some of the cool and minimalistic trends of the past to be replaced with more approachable designs that convey comfort, warmth and positivity.

When we think about interior design, it's easy to let our thoughts drift to pretty paint samples, fabric swatches and other ways we want to beautiful our space.
