Call for Diversity and Inclusion Committee
In light of the recent movement to support the BIPOC community, The Interior Design Society is implementing a Diversity & Inclusion Committee to examine and evaluate the society's efforts to create a more inclusive organization. We want to ensure the voices of all our members are accurately represented in order to foster, support, and perpetuate an inclusive and diverse environment within IDS. The committee will be comprised of members who drive the vision and initiatives of IDS as they relate to diversity, inclusion, and equity for the society. Their roles will include developing resources, educational experiences, and advising chapter leadership. Please fill out this form if you are interested in serving on the Diversity & Inclusion Committee!

August Member Spotlight: Lisa Pollock
When did you realize that you wanted to become an interior designer?
I have always embraced creativity and been drawn to art in one form or another. Around the age of 10, I remember feeling completely uninspired over the lavender shade of wall to wall carpet in my bedroom. I rearranged the furniture and begged my mother to install a more neutral colored rug, or even better, refinish the wood floors beneath. I guess you can say that's when my focus on interiors really started.

The fundamentals of light layering
According to top residential lighting expert Randall Whitehead, "There is no single light fixture that gives you everything you need to illuminate a room properly." In the home and commercial spaces, proper light layering — ambient, task and accent lighting — helps you bring a room to life with design flexibility and functionality.

Introducing the Shayla Copas Collection with Chelsea House
Shayla Copas writes: It sounds a bit cliche, but this collection with Chelsea House really is a dream come true. During the process, I strove for the dreamy part to be apparent in the designs, too. I wanted a touch of whimsy throughout the collection, and I hope all the bee accents really evoke that feeling. This might be surprising, but I love insects and reptiles, so it felt totally natural for me to incorporate bees in the collection.

Homeowners doing more improvements with less
By Michael J. Berens
Home renovation and improvement activity has surged in recent months as owners confined to home have responded to the urge to undertake needed repairs or make their living environment more pleasant. Due to concerns about health, finances or the unavailability of renovation specialists, many of these homeowners have chosen to do the work themselves. In some sectors, though, remodelers are also experiencing increased demand.

These common design terms have troubled meanings
House Beautiful
Part of being an interior designer is knowing the vocabulary. A good designer can discuss Kuba cloth, Greek Revival architectural details and clerestory windows with ease. However, there are other words in the design lexicon that have more fraught backstories, including origins in colonialism, prejudice and slavery.

A century-old home on Long Island receives a modern makeover

A few years ago, McLeod donated her services to one such auction, and the Manhattan family who won used her company, Right Meets Left Interior Design, to decorate a nursery for their new baby.
