My 30-Minute, $0 Nate Berkus Living Room Makeover
There are some situations in life where the only answer is yes. Alice Waters asks if you'd like her to cook something up for dinner? Diane Von Furstenberg wants to know if you'd like a custom wrap dress? Beyoncé asks you anything? Nate Berkus, staring at your living room, asks if he can rearrange it? Yes, yes, yes, and oh my goodness, yes.
Dwell Magazine's Amanda Dameron at Home
The New York Times
Amanda Dameron could easily be a design snob, but her approach to decorating is as practical as it is discerning. Although she's the editor in chief of Dwell, the 14-year-old shelter magazine whose tagline is "At Home in the Modern World," she does not live surrounded with furniture and accessories found only in the Museum of Modern Art's architecture and design collection or the Design Within Reach catalog.
The Cat in the Hat Inspires a Nursery Color Palette
"It is fun to have fun, but you have to know how." So says The Cat in the Hat. A piece of Dr. Seuss' artwork his grandmother gave to baby Pierce and his parents inspired a color palette of navy and gray and a sense of fun. The new room has a large rug for learning to crawl and climb, stylish shelves that can keep lots of fun toys and books corralled in one place, a kiddie piano, a ride-on car and a cozy spot for cuddles and bedtime stories. Don't let the fun fool you; safety was top priority for interior designer Cory Connor, whose clients were first-time parents.
Hacking a big danger for small businesses
The Associated Press via USA Today
It's not just big businesses like JPMorgan Chase, Target and Home Depot that get hacked. Small companies suffer from intrusions into their computer systems, too. The costs associated with computer and website attacks can run well into the thousands and even millions of dollars for a small company.
Is Designing for Friends Causing Trouble for You?
Design Biz Blueprint
Many designers begin their careers by helping friends design their homes or offices for free. Sometimes, though, designers are working for a group of their friends who have come to expect a lifetime of free design service. This amounts to running a "design charity" instead of a business. Thankfully this isn't a difficult problem to solve.
Small House is a Great House for Interior Designer's Family
The Seattle Times
Michelle Burgess believes that if you look and if you listen, a house will tell you what to do. This is the story of what the interior designer/artist did to hers.
What Is the Owner's Role in the Interior Design Process?
Whether developing a new office building or simply redoing a current one, a proper interior design process is crucial to the success of the project. Owners have a vision of what they want, their design partners have their own ideas, and owners need to make sure everyone's on the same page. How do they do that? Design Intelligence offers a step-by-step guide for commercial office owners.
We Can't Get Enough Of: Farmhouse Style
Rustic furniture and farmhouse style are having a real moment right now. From homes and clothing stores covered in salvaged wood siding to restaurants and coffee shops using reclaimed barn beams for their furniture, everyone seems to love that simple, worn-in aesthetic. But no matter how prevalent the look is, we never tire of it when it's done well.
