Chinese businesses eye purchasing power of LGBT community
Chinese businesses are starting to show interest in the purchasing power of the LGBT consumer market — often referred to as the "pink dollar" — a trend led by e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. The U.S. business magazine Forbes says the purchasing power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community worldwide amounts to US$ 3 trillion annually.

Civil rights bill top priority for LGBT voters, according to new poll

With the Supreme Court set to rule in the coming months on marriage equality, the gay rights community already is gearing up for its next big fight: The push for a comprehensive federal nondiscrimination bill. The Human Rights Campaign is out with a new poll that shows 74 percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans believe such legislation should be a "top priority" for the community. Only marriage equality scored higher.

David Cameron: We need to do more to tackle trans discrimination

More needs to be done to tackle "specific issues of discrimination" against the trans community, David Cameron has said. The Prime Minister made the comments in an interview to BuzzFeed. He was asked if trans rights represented the next "battle ground" for equality following the legislation of same-sex marriage.

German court fines relatives for abducting gay Muslim
A German court fined the father and two uncles of an 18-year-old Muslim citizen for depriving him of his personal freedom when he was a minor in an attempt, the victim says, to force him into marriage with a woman despite his homosexuality. In a case highlighting the problems Germany faces in integrating its four million strong Muslim community, Nasser El-Ahmad, who has a Lebanese background, has also told German media that his family tortured him for being gay.

Multiparty group to examine LGBT discrimination

A group of lawmakers recently launched a multiparty caucus to examine discrimination against sexual minorities in a move expected to further intensify debate ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The group, led by Liberal Democratic Party member and former education vice minister Hiroshi Hase, Democratic Party of Japan policy chief Goshi Hosono and Komeito member Masaaki Taniai, said it is planning to study overseas laws on same-sex unions as well as canvass the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
