Japan LGBT candidate hopes to raise awareness in election campaign
Taiga Ishikawa has an uphill battle in his bid to become Japan's only openly gay member of parliament, but hopes his campaign for the general election will raise awareness in a nation where gay rights hardly get a nod in the mainstream political agenda. Ishikawa is keen for his candidacy, which has attracted considerable attention on the Internet, to help others in Japan's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community come out of the closet.

Russia 'ignoring' anti-gay attacks, says Human Rights Watch

Russia's authorities have failed to prevent an increase in homophobic attacks, Human Rights Watch has warned. The U.S.-based body said Russia's leadership had reacted to violence and anti-gay rhetoric with silence, and it accused some officials of hate speech. A 2013 law banning gay "propaganda" had led to more attacks, it said.

Living in fear: Egypt's gay community
Two men exchange rings and hug in celebration aboard a Nile boat, as ululations fill the air and a traditional engagement song plays in the background. But within days, their celebration has turned to shock and sadness: after a video of the "gay wedding" spread across Egyptian social media, the men were arrested and eventually sentenced to three years in prison for distributing pornographic material.

Seoul's mayor apologizes for nixing gay rights

Mayor Park Won-soon of Seoul has issued an apology for indefinitely delaying a human rights charter that would have protected lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender South Koreans from discrimination in the municipality's greater region, reports Pink News. Park's apology comes after activists staged sit-ins at Seoul City Hall. The demonstrators sought to protest the city government's decision to delay adopting an LGBT-inclusive municipal human rights charter, allegedly caving to pressure from Protestant church groups.

Albania gay rights groups open first LGBTI shelter in Balkan region

A new residential shelter for LGBTI people who are homeless, suffer domestic violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, or live in an unsafe environment, opened recently in Tirana, Albania. Streha, "the Shelter" in Albanian, is a project founded by two Albanian gay rights organizations, Alenaca LGBT and ProLGBT, and will offer temporary (up to six months) housing and services to its users, including life skills training, vocational training opportunities and psycho-social support.

Thousands march in first Quezon City pride

More than 4,000 members and supporters of the LGBTI community took to the streets of Quezon City on Saturday (13 December) for the city's first pride parade. The event commemorated the 20th anniversary of the first pride in the Philippines and was a 'pet project' of the recently formed Quezon City Pride Council (QCPC).

Brand USA gets 5 more years as Senate passes government spending bill
Brand USA, the private but quasi-governmental U.S. travel marketing arm, won a new lease on life as the U.S. Senate followed the House and passed a $1.1 trillion federal government spending bill recently that reauthorizes Brand USA through 2020. President Obama is expected to sign the government spending legislation, which funds the government through the end of the next fiscal year, avoiding a government shutdown and officially reauthorizing Brand USA in the process.
