Tom Schneider to begin second term as WPO president
During a recent board meeting at Interpack in Dusseldorf, Germany, the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) unanimously elected Thomas L. Schneider, CPP, to a second term as WPO's President for 2015-2017. Through multiple leadership positions, Mr. Schneider's participation in IoPP helped pave the way to his extensive and influential WPO involvement. Mr. Schneider served on the IoPP National Board as President and Chair in 2004 and 2005 respectively. He is a member of the IoPP College of Fellows and also an Honorary Life Member of the Institute, and is a member of the Packaging Hall of Fame.

IoPP seminars, AmeriStar reception June 10 in New York City

2013 IoPP AmeriStar winners achieve WPO WorldStar status
On May 13, entrants of the World Packaging Organisation's Worldstar Awards gathered at the Messe Düsseldorf during interpack 2014 for the prestigious and global awards ceremony. More than 80 winners were present at the sold out event. This year, the Worldstar Awards announced 139 winners. Of those 139, nine of the winning packages had previously won IoPP AmeriStar Awards: Frito-Lay's Flat Bottom Pillow Bag, Kellogg Company's Post Consumer Bag for Dry Food, PepsiCo's Gatorade G Series Perform Sideline Carrier Promotional Pack, PepsiCo's Pure Leaf Square HF PET Container, PepsiCo's Gatorade Prime Performance Chews, Perfecseal's TKA Femoral Packaging System, Planet Canit's Aquiesse Candle Tin, Staples' Smart-Size Packaging and the Clorox Company's SmartTube Technology.

Online packaging education with an instructor — when it's convenient for you

Plastic packaging made from air?
Dell has announced new sustainability initiatives that it says have been designed to increase the ways that its IT solutions make lasting contributions to the planet. According to the company, it is the first in the IT industry to introduce carbon-negative packaging, through a partnership with Newlight Technologies, inventor and manufacturer of AirCarbon.
Digital printing enables a closer relationship with consumers
Coca-Cola's campaign in 2013 of printing popular names on soda-bottle labels showed the power of digital printing for brand marketing. New developments announced at the mid-May interpack show in Dusseldorf, Germany, continue to advance the applications for mass-customization packaging, and make it easier for brand owners to implement personalization on their packaging line.

With natural and organic brands continuing to inundate the marketplace, processors are turning to market segmentation to claim their niches. Packaging is providing essential support, with designs that call out to targeted segments. The trend is occurring in both North America and Europe, within natural and organic categories ranging from peanut butter to sparkling water.
