IoPP announces AmeriStar award winners for 2014
IoPP is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 AmeriStar Package Awards Competition. Judges evaluated and analyzed packages from 13 categories in a new online, virtual judging process during the month of April. Judging was based on package innovation, sustainability, protection, economics, performance and marketing. Top AmeriStar winners included the Best of Show Award, the Sustainable Package Award and, the Design Excellence Award. Winners were honored at the AmeriStar and Visionary Awards Reception, hosted by UBM Canon, on June 10 during EastPack in New York City.

Fundamentals of Packaging Technology, 5th Edition is now available

WorldStar Packaging Awards 2015 opens for entries on July 1
The World Packaging Organization (WPO) announced that entries for WorldStar Packaging Awards 2015 will be open from July 1 to Oct. 10. Judging for WorldStar considers the following criteria: protection and preservation of contents; ease of handling, filling, opening and closing; adequacy of information; marketing appeal; graphic design; quality of production; economy of material and cost reduction; environment; ingenuity of construction; and adaption to local conditions (production, materials, market). There is a new category this year: the Point of Sale Category, which recognizes the best packaging in the end of aisle display and counter display. Winners of a WorldStar are also eligible to participate in three other special categories: Sustainable Packaging Award, Marketing Award and President's Award. IoPP AmeriStar winners for 2014 are eligible to enter the WorldStar Awards competition.

WorldStar Student Awards 2014 call for entries open until Nov. 7
The World Packaging Organization (WPO) announced that the entries for the WorldStar Student Awards 2014 are open until Nov. 7. The WorldStar Student Awards is an international packaging design competition for students from countries around the world who have developed projects in the field of packaging design. To participate in the competition, packaging entries must be innovative, aesthetically appealing, environmentally compliant, easy to manufacture, convenient and relevant on a global level. This year the judging process will be from Nov. 15-30. Winners will be announced in December. Entering and judging will be done completely online. Nominations open for PMMI Packaging Hall of Fame
PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, the owner and producer of the PACK EXPO family of trade shows, is accepting nominations for the Packaging Hall of Fame Class of 2014. The deadline for nominations is July 15. The inductees will be celebrated during a reception on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Chicago, during PACK EXPO International and Pharma EXPO 2014 (McCormick Place, Chicago; Nov. 2–5). You can submit nominations online now.

Wikipearls: Bite-sized foods wrapped in edible packaging
WikiCells, a form of edible packaging, were developed a few years ago by Harvard professor David Edwards. After years of research, development and raising funds, the culmination is the WikiPearl, a bite-sized morsel of food that is wrapped in a plastic-free packaging that protects the food, but is also edible and biodegradable.

The flavor stays fresh thanks to the innovative two-cup chamber system with folding seam that keeps the unique Monte cream — a combination of creamy milk, chocolate and hazelnuts — separate from the fruit and other crispy ingredients until they are mixed just before eating. The plastic container is manufactured using a thin-walled injection molding technique with in-mold labeling.
Coffee pod recycling in the US: How likely?
An article from Packaging World posted on the IoPP LinkedIn group regarding Nespresso Austria's use of a recyclable, compostable bag for collection of its recyclable coffee capsules stirred up some strong responses, when readers were asked, "How willing would U.S. consumers be to bringing coffee capsules to a collection center for recycling?" One often-cited excuse for low recycling rates in the U.S. is consumer apathy and lack of education and guidance.
How companies are developing brand loyalty with conscious consumers
Packaging professionals are always on the hunt for the next big way to appeal to consumers. When it comes to buying products, the old adage "Don't judge a book by its cover" simply doesn't apply. Packaging is the first thing a consumer sees, and its design can play a huge part in a purchasing decision. This doesn't mean, however, that looks are all that matter; environmentally-savvy customers are as equally concerned about the fate of the packaging as they are in its aesthetics.
Performance packaging launches cap for flexible packages
Performance Packaging of Nevada has introduced the SipP cap, a new design for flexible spouted pouches used for such products as health and energy, fruit purees, organic products and baby food as well as products such as non-food and medical applications. The new cap also functions well on major existing industry filling machinery lines.
