Medical Device Packaging Technical Committee to organize nurses panel at HealthPack 2015
IoPP's Medical Device Packaging Technical Committee will take over the organization and running of the nurses panel for HealthPack 2015. The nurses panel continues to be a signature event at the HealthPack event, which is dedicated to issues and new technologies in the area of medical device packaging. The nurses panel at HealthPack consists of local operating room nurses reviewing and commenting on submitted medical device packages and then answer conference attendees' questions about their likes and dislikes about the packages they have encountered in their work. Registration open for 2015 Fundamentals course in-person classes
IoPP has scheduled 2015 Fundamentals of Packaging Technology in-person classes, and registration is open. Semesters 1-2 will be June 15-19 and Semesters 3-4 will be July 27-31 in suburban Chicago. These are the only scheduled 2015 in-person classroom dates. The course, taught by IoPP's certified instructors, covers all the major areas of packaging, with emphasis on materials, design, printing, distribution and much more! You can register for single semesters of 2 1/2 days each, in any order, or for all four semesters (10 days) in a discounted bundled package. When it comes to food packaging, what we don't know could hurt us
It's almost impossible to imagine life without flexible, transparent and water-resistant food packaging, without plastic sandwich bags, cling film or shelves filled with plastic jars, tubs and tubes, and durable bags and boxes. While storing food in containers dates back thousands of years, and food has been sold in bottles since the 1700s and cans since the 1800s, what might be considered the modern age of food packaging began in the 1890s when crackers were first sold in sealed waxed paper bags inside a paperboard box.
Tetra Pak launches industry's 1st entirely plant-based pack
Tetra Pak has announced the launch of the industry's first carton made entirely from plant-based, renewable packaging materials. The new Tetra Rex carton will be the first in the market to have bio-based low-density polyethylene films and bio-based high-density polyethylene caps, both derived from sugar cane, in addition to Forest Stewardship Council certified paperboard.
How 3-D printing empowers packaging operations
3D printers have been used for years to make packaging prototypes. But the new frontier for 3-D printing is a bit more industrious, as packaging engineers figure out how to use it to help their manufacturing operations. This is one of the hottest areas in 3-D printing, according to Mike Littrell, president of CIDEAS, a 3-D printing and finishing firm.

Americans continue to recycle more plastic bottles
Plastic bottle recycling grew 120 million pounds in 2013, edging up 4.3 percent, to top 2.9 billion pounds for the year, according to figures released jointly by the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers and the American Chemistry Council. The recycling rate for plastic bottles climbed from 0.4 to 30.9 percent for the year.
