IoPP announces AmeriStar awards program call for entries
IoPP's AmeriStar Package Awards Competition is now open for entries! The AmeriStar awards program is considered North America's most prestigious packaging awards competition and commemorates the best packages of the year judged in 14 categories. New for 2014 — AmeriStar entries will be submitted and judged online, so the program will dramatically and "greenly" reduce entry preparation time and material and shipping costs. A new player in the US packaging market
German packaging specialist Südpack GmbH & Co believes the company is ready to conquer the North American packaging market with its Südpack USA subsidiary. With a strong focus on resealable packaging as well as deep drawing flexible and hard films for the food industry, the company says that Chicago is the ideal setting for further growth.
Study: Converted flexible packaging demand increasing
A recent study projects increasing demand for converted flexible packaging, in the form of lightweight bags and pouches.
New product introductions are expected to boost demand and provide opportunities for additional market penetration for pouches and bags, according to The Freedonia Group Inc., a Cleveland, Ohio-based industry market research firm.
REI encourages consumers to go green, reduce packaging
this holiday season
As consumers hit the stores this holiday season, REI is reminding them to vote with their dollars. Pointing to its own recent success in packaging waste reduction, the company argues that choosing an environmentally friendly product in a sustainable package sends a strong message to manufacturers in the final weeks of the year.
Pactiv, local politicians oppose possible NYC foam packaging ban
If New York City bans food-service packaging made of polystyrene — commonly called by the trade name Styrofoam — Pactiv Corp. would take a big hit. The Illinois-based manufacturer whose Canandaigua plant employs more than 800 people supplies a bulk of the foam packaging sold in New York City.
How to grow packaging from cotton waste
A team of scientists with the Agricultural Research Service has developed agricultural waste blends that can be combined with fungi to literally grow custom packaging material. The biodegradable blends, developed by ARS engineer Greg Holt and his colleagues, are being used by industry partner Ecovative Design to create custom biodegradable packaging to protect computers and other products during shipping.
Merger planned for US and Dutch flexible packaging companies
Flexible packaging powerhouses Scholle Packaging Inc., of North Lake, Ill., and Innovative Packaging Network of the Netherlands are combining forces.
Both companies plan to retain their identities but noted that the combined entity will provide a more diverse worldwide packaging operation with more than 2,000 employees. Terms were not announced.
Bioplastics demand to hit 6.2 million tons by 2017
Increasing global demand for eco-friendly materials will push demand for bio-based plastics to 6.2 million tons by 2017. The amount of packaging, products and other items produced with bio-based plastics is expected to more than quadruple over the next five years, from 1.4 million metric tons of annual production capacity in 2012.
Report: Lightweight packaging to boost US consumption of plastics
Americans will be using 32,850 million more rigid plastic and flexible packs in 2017 than they were in 2012, making these the fastest-growing segments in the U.S. packaging industry.
According to the "Latest Trends and Key Issues in the U.S. Retail Packaging Market 2013" study by market research firm Canadean, the requirement for greater convenience and cost-effectiveness will drive the use of lightweight flexible and rigid plastic packaging with innovative pack shapes, closures and dispensers.

According to a recent survey conducted by marketing specialist Marketo, colors can greatly impact consumer perception of a brand. In fact, a product's color can influence from 60-80 percent of customers' purchasing choices.
While it's important to choose attention-grabbing colors for your fleet graphics, you'll also want to choose colors that effectively interpret your product, your brand and your company.
