AmeriStar winner Butterball's butter sculpture breaks the mold in design

From Oct. 6: The 2014 AmeriStar Design Excellence Award winner went to Display Pack's packaging design for the Butterball Farms Butter Sculptures packaging. Butterball Farms looked to Display Pack for a solution to its butter sculptures and what they got was an innovative and appealing design — a package that is also a mold for the butter sculpture.

From May 5: IoPP is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 Honors & Awards program. Distinguished IoPP members are recognized through this program. These members have been awarded with the following awards: Honorary Life Member (Edward Church, Lifetime CPP; Richard Frain; Stephen Schulte, Lifetime CPP); College of Fellows (Mike Beck, Lifetime CPP; Dave Leinberger, Lifetime CPP; Camille Chism, Lifetime CPP); and Member of the Year (Robert Meisner, CPP, Fellow).

Poll: Excessive packaging dangerous, frustrating for consumers

From Jan. 13: The majority of Canadians say hard-to-open packaging is frustrating and even dangerous. "Wrap rage" refers to the frustration people feel when trying to pry open hard plastic packaging that seems all but impenetrable. More than 90 percent of Canadians who took part in the Marketplace poll say they have experienced rage when opening a product in the past five years, while 69 percent say they have injured themselves in the process.

Packaging stalwart and staunch IoPP supporter Al McKinlay passes away
IoPP
From Aug. 18: Alfred H. McKinlay, P.E., CPP, Fellow, passed away peacefully at his home in Pattersonville, New York, on August 6. Mr. McKinlay was a devoted IoPP member, joining the Institute in 1964. He was a Certified Packaging Professional, a member of IoPP's College of Fellows and an Honorary Lifetime member. Mr. McKinlay attended Woestina High School and later received a bachelor's of science degree from Union College where a scholarship has been created in his name.

IoPP announces AmeriStar award winners for 2014

From June 17: IoPP is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 AmeriStar Package Awards Competition. Judges evaluated and analyzed packages from 13 categories in a new online, virtual judging process during the month of April. Judging was based on package innovation, sustainability, protection, economics, performance and marketing. Top AmeriStar winners included the Best of Show Award, the Sustainable Package Award and, the Design Excellence Award. Winners were honored at the AmeriStar and Visionary Awards Reception, hosted by UBM Canon, on June 10 during EastPack in New York City.

One designer's lonely crusade to make packaging disappear

AmeriStar winner Clorox Company featured in Packaging Digest

From Sept. 8: With sustainable packaging as integral to design, the Clorox Company's Brita Pitcher Open-Sided Carton — this year's IoPP AmeriStar Sustainable Package award winner — consists of a carton tray and band containing a pitcher protected by shrink film. This open-sided design allows for significant material waste reduction from the previous packaging while eliminating the threat of damage by letting shoppers look at the actual pitcher without opening the carton.
