Building on its zero-tolerance policy for hospital-acquired infections and medication errors in its member facilities, the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, N.Y., recently opened The Patient Safety Institute in neighboring Lake Success. The new site will serve as a learning center for staff and a training center for medical students who will be attending the health system’s medical school in partnership with Hofstra University. Reassessing four-day workweeks

The verdict is still out on whether switching to four-day workweeks will save companies massive amounts of money, as witnessed by a recent audit of the state of Utah's program for its employees. Still, experts say the alternative schedule does have its merits — provided companies manage potential pitfalls. According to a performance audit of the Working 4 Utah Work Initiative published last month by the state's Legislative Auditor General, the program has saved less than a $1 million in building operations, overtime, and fleet services costs. That figure is far less than what former Gov. Jon Huntsman had initially projected when he instituted the four-day workweek for most state employees in 2008. More
