Obama officials ditch 'exchanges' in rebranding of healthcare reform law
The Hill    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Obama administration is rebranding the central component of its signature healthcare law. The Health and Human Services Department suddenly stopped referring to insurance "exchanges" this week, even as it heralded ongoing efforts to prod states into setting up their own. Instead, press materials and a website for the public referred to insurance "marketplaces" in each state. More

UnitedHealth: Participation in overhaul coverage expansion
depends on fairness, viability

The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
UnitedHealth CEO Stephen Hemsley said analysts shouldn't assume that the nation's largest health insurer will participate widely in the health care overhaul's online insurance exchanges. They will allow people to buy coverage that starts in 2014, some with help from income-based tax credits. More

Stateline via Kaiser Health News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The recent mass killings in Tucson, Ariz., Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., have sparked public conversations about the deficiencies in state-run mental health systems across the United States. South Carolina Medicaid director touts agency savings
Myrtle Beach Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
South Carolina's Medicaid director has said his agency's savings initiatives are allowing tens of millions of dollars to be spent on the state's many other needs. Under the Department of Health and Human Services' preliminary budget request last fall, the escalating cost of Medicaid would have eaten up every dollar of additional revenue currently projected to come into state coffers next fiscal year. Provider fee bill sails through Georgia Senate
Georgia Health News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Georgia State Senate has passed legislation that would facilitate the renewal of the hospital provider fee, after soundly rejecting a bid to tie the bill's approval to Georgia expanding its Medicaid program. As envisioned by the 2010 federal health reform law, Medicaid expansion would add more than 600,000 lower-income Georgians to the program. Senate Democrats offered the amendment to allow the provider fee to fund expansion of the Medicaid program. The amendment failed on a party-line vote, 36-18. More

In the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling to uphold the Affordable Care Act, approximately 30 million uninsured Americans under age 65 stand to gain coverage under the law.
