North Carolina Medicaid overhaul plan mapped by health agency

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory's health agency is rethinking initial proposals to fix Medicaid costs by hiring a handful of big managed care organizations to run the state's $13 billion healthcare system. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services recently presented framework for revamping Medicaid to an advisory group. The state legislature is expected to consider changes in May.

Sebelius lashes out at GOP governors

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius recently accused GOP governors of "playing with people's lives" by refusing to expand Medicaid in their states under Obamacare. The criticism from Sebelius is the latest example of an effort by Democrats and the White House to take the offense on the issue of healthcare.

MHPA: GAO should differentiate full-risk 'managed care' from PCCMs

Medicaid Health Plans of America says a Feb. 19 GAO report, "Medicaid: Demographics and Service Usage of Certain High-Expenditure Beneficiaries," does not adequately capture important information about Medicaid managed care and the group argues that GAO inaccurately puts risk-based capitated managed care with "managed care" models, such as Primary Care Case Management, which the group said are disjointed.

Consumer advocates call for temporary suspension of California duals demo

Six consumer advocacy organizations, including the National Senior Citizens Law Center, "urgently requested" California officials to temporary suspend the state's demonstration program for dually eligible beneficiaries in a Feb. 21 letter addressed to both federal and state officials. The letter states that residents on Medicaid have not been given adequate notice of the changes to their coverage and call centers are unprepared.

Long-delayed Georgia doctors pay hike finally arriving

Study: Limited benefit to some 'medical homes'

You may have heard the term "medical home" to describe a way of organizing doctors' practices to provide more comprehensive, less costly, patient-friendly treatment. Insurance companies often offer more money to practices that become recognized as medical homes, which use a team approach to coordinate care. States are even looking to medical homes to help save money in their Medicaid programs.

Ohio is among a small but growing number of states working to enroll prisoners in Medicaid when they get sick and as they are being released. The move could save the state nearly $18 million this year alone in costs of providing health care to prisoners — money that would be shifted onto the federal government’s tab.
