In conservative Arizona, government-run healthcare that works
Kaiser Health News
As Congress debates an ambitious and far-reaching effort by the Obama administration to streamline medical care and rein in spending for the nation's sickest and most expensive patients, Arizona — with a Republican governor and Tea Party enthusiasts — is occupying an unusual place in the national landscape — as a model for how a generously funded, tightly regulated government program can aid vulnerable, low-income patients.

The Texas Tribune via Kaiser Health News
House Republicans have agreed not to expand Medicaid as called for under the federal Affordable Care Act — but left the door open to doing so if the Obama administration grants Texas enough flexibility. McDonnell, under fire from GOP right, sends Sebelius stern letter on
Virginia Medicaid expansion

The Associated Press via The Washington Post
Under fire from the conservatives in his own Republican Party, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell sent the Obama administration a letter ruling out Medicaid expansion in the 10 months left in McDonnell's four-year term. In the seven-paragraph letter, McDonnell bluntly states to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that the expansion of the federal-state health program for the poor, elderly and disabled is his prerogative, not that of a commission. He also lectures her on shortcomings he sees in the President Barack Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

About 3,000 people who were eligible lost Medicaid in Pennsylvania
The Associated Press via The Patriot-News
About 3,000 people who had been bumped off the state of Pennsylvania's Medicaid rolls amid a case review that alarmed advocates for the poor were found to be eligible for the healthcare program, Gov. Tom Corbett's top public welfare official told senators. Bev Mackereth, the Department of Public Welfare's acting secretary, told a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing that her agency made the discovery after sending more than 100,000 letters to people who had their cases closed after the review began in August 2011.

Maine Medical Association comes out in support of Medicaid expansion
Bangor Daily News
The chief lobbyist for Maine's doctors said that his organization would support an expansion of Maine's Medicaid program next year as part of the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration's landmark healthcare reform law. Gordon Smith, executive vice president of the Maine Medical Association, told members of the legislature's budget-writing Appropriations Committee an expansion of the state's Medicaid rolls would translate into more insured patients who seek medical care routinely rather than seeking care in more expensive hospital emergency rooms.
