The spending bill released Wednesday would double the amount of funding provided for child care for low-income working families. The Child Care Development Block Grant would see a $2.3 billion increase in fiscal 2018, bringing the program's total budget to $5.2 billion. If passed, it would be the largest single-year increase in the program’s history.
The omnibus will also include a $610 million increase to Head Start, a program that provides preschool for low-income families.

The budget bill from Northam is nearly identical to the one that outgoing governor Terry McAuliffe put forward in December, including plans to let 400,000 uninsured Virginians enroll in Medicaid — no strings attached.

Malcolm Alaimo celebrated his fourth birthday on March 14.
Throughout the day, which began with Mickey Mouse pancakes and ended with a Curious George cake, he played outside with his family and opened presents.
But unlike other 4-year-olds, every birthday he celebrates is a minor miracle.
That's because Malcolm was born with congenital cytomegalovirus — an infection that has resulted in a host of neurological deficits and organ functioning issues.

A judge on Monday dismissed the state of Tennessee's lawsuit accusing the U.S. government of unconstitutionally coercing it into subsidizing the federal refugee resettlement program.
Tennessee accused the government of invading its sovereignty by requiring it to provide Medicaid benefits to refugees, or else risk losing nearly $7 billion of Medicaid funds annually, equal to about 20 percent of its state budget, if it refused.
