Alabama legislature to take on revamp of Medicaid

The Alabama State Legislature is set to begin work on an overhaul bill that will change Medicaid to a managed care plan by 2017. The plan that will be introduced to House and Senate committees is the result of a 14-month effort by the 33-member Alabama Medicaid Advisory Commission formed by Gov. Robert Bentley in late 2012.

Texas Senate approves overhaul of long-term Medicaid care

The Texas Senate unanimously approved an overhaul of long-term and acute care Medicaid services in an effort to expand care to more Texans with disabilities while saving millions of state dollars. Senate Bill 7 is expected to save $8.5 million in Medicaid costs in the 2014-15 biennium by expanding managed care services, establishing pilot programs to try to provide services at capitated costs and implementing measures to ensure more efficient monitoring of services.

New Hampshire House kills ban on Medicaid expansion

The New Hampshire House rejected a bill that would have prevented the state from expanding Medicaid under the federal healthcare law. The Democrat-controlled House voted 206-155 largely along party lines to kill former House Speaker William O'Brien's bill to ban the expansion supported by Democratic Gov. Maggie Hassan.

House leaders expressed support for a Senate budget provision that would bar expansion of the state's Medicaid program without the legislature's OK. House Speaker Ray Merrick, a Stillwell Republican, said he sided with language added to the Senate budget bill that would bar state agencies from spending any money to expand eligibility for the Kansas Medicaid program without the expressed consent of the legislature.

West Virginia diocese joins call for expanding Medicaid

The leader of West Virginia's Roman Catholic community has joined the chorus urging Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to expand Medicaid to cover more low-income residents. Bishop Michael J. Bransfield wrote the governor, citing deep concerns about the health and well-being of West Virginians he's developed in his eight years with the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and its 83,000 or so Catholics.

Health Partners outpaces other area plans in provider satisfaction

Heath Partners scored significantly higher than all other Southeastern Pennsylvania Medical Assistance plans in 80 percent of the categories in its 2012 Provider Satisfaction Survey. Receiving a statistically high 30.8 percent response rate from the 1,700 primary care physicians, specialists, hospitals and ancillary facilities solicited, the survey measured satisfaction with Health Partners on a broad range of administrative and healthcare issues. It was administered by The Myers Group, an independent survey firm.

Aetna's 'good fight' against prescription abuse sees improved
adherence to Suboxone

Through its in-house PBM unit, Aetna Pharmacy Management, Aetna Inc. has taken what Pharmacy Director Yrena Friedmann, Pharm.D., described as both a compassionate and diligent approach to managing prescription drug misuse, waste and abuse, with specific controls and case review around opioid dependence. As a result of its mail campaign to promote the use of Suboxone, which has just gone generic and is indicated for opioid addiction, the insurer has seen a 16 percent jump in adherence, Friedmann said in a recent conference presentation.
