White House touts slow increase in healthcare costs

Personal healthcare costs rose in the 12 months ending in May at the slowest rate in the last 50 years, as spending on hospital and nursing home services declined, the White House announced. Personal consumption spending rose 1.1 percent, said Alan Krueger, chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Hospital readmissions rates dropped from an average of 19 percent to 17.9 percent for Medicare patients since the passage of the 2010 healthcare law, Krueger said.

KanCare beneficiaries asked to submit new information by Sept. 15

Some Medicaid beneficiaries are being asked to submit new information to the state by Sept. 15, officials from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment announced. In the coming days, about 130,000 households with Medicaid coverage — also known as KanCare — will receive a mailing asking them to list each in person in the household who plans to file an income tax return in 2014.
