Kaiser Health News
On June 18, Houston-based Sharon Roberts, who had been diagnosed with endometrial cancer a year before, put this message out into the Twitterverse: "@teachdance11: the BRCA gene test is two parts. Aetna paid $300 part. Not the $7000 part. Gotta be rich to be in the know." The 55-year-old teacher was surprised when @aetnahelp, the customer service Twitter feed for the insurance company Aetna, quickly responded.

Arkansas's private option being vetted by the feds
By Kyle Cheney, Politico Pulse
Arkansas's novel alternative to Medicaid expansion is now in the hands of the Obama administration, and the outcome could blaze a path for other states resisting massive growth in the program. The state submitted a waiver request to CMS for a plan that would send thousands of Medicaid-eligible patients onto private plans available through the state's exchange. The plan passed a Republican-dominated Legislature and was signed by Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe — and other red states have eyed similar options to capture the billions of dollars available to Medicaid expansion states without actually growing the rolls of the public program
NH Medicaid panel looks at Arkansas, Iowa models
Valley News
The commission studying the pros and cons of Medicaid expansion in New Hampshire recently took a look at the model offered by Arkansas and Iowa, two states that are seeking to expand health coverage for low-income residents through private insurance instead of traditional Medicaid.

My Place CT — Connecticut's plan for long-term care
Kaiser Health News
None of us wants to face it, but our chances of needing a caregiver when we're older are pretty high — about two of out every three older Americans need help with "routine daily activities, such as eating, bathing, dressing, paying bills and preparing meals." And, as the population ages, the need for people to provide those services is sharply increasing, even as the affordability and availability of long-term care insurance is diminishing.

Michigan GOP backs 'free-market' Medicaid
Daily Press & Argus
The Livingston County Republican Party is formally supporting a "free-market" plan intended to reduce Medicaid rolls over expansion of the program to Michigan's working poor. The county GOP this month joined several county GOP chapters statewide in passing resolutions supporting Senate Bills 459-460, which would allow the state to license private healthcare exchanges and in 2015 move existing Medicaid recipients to private health savings accounts funded with program dollars.
CDC: Childhood obesity rates falling in many states
USA Today
Obesity rates among preschoolers are falling in many states for the first time in decades, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Small but significant declines in obesity among low-income preschoolers were found in 18 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands from 2008 to 2011, CDC director Thomas Frieden said at a press telebriefing.
