Georgia has picked winners for two big Medicaid contracts.
The Georgia Department of Community Health said on Sept. 9 it intends to award contracts to Amerigroup Georgia, CareSource Georgia, Peach State Health Plan Inc. and WellCare to provide services to the Georgia Families Care Management Organization.

New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo completed a daylong tour to Puerto Rico on Tuesday by promising to offer advice, technical assistance and summitry to a territory facing some $72 billion in debt. The assistance was largely in the form of expertise and influence, including promises to push Washington to increase federal health care funding on the island and to develop a plan to evaluate and improve its current Medicaid program; to send state teams specializing in agriculture and energy issues; and to hold a "commercialization summit" to help find funding for "promising early-stage Puerto Rican businesses."

Upstate New York health insurer Excellus BlueCross BlueShield on Wednesday said its computer systems and those at affiliates had been breached, exposing data from more than 10 million members, in the latest case to show the industry is still struggling to ward off hackers. The Rochester-based insurer said it and its affiliates had been the target of a sophisticated cyber attack and that it was taking steps to address the situation and offering free identity theft protection services to those affected.

Anna Standage said she attended a town hall meeting sponsored by opponents of Medicaid expansion Wednesday because she's worried the effort to pass a plan to provide healthcare to low-income Utahns is gaining momentum. At the event held in the Herriman City Library, Standage and about a dozen others heard Michael Cannon, director of health policy studies at the Libertarian-leaning Cato Institute, detail what he said are flaws with the federal program.

As of Aug. 2, as many as 31,400 Arkansans had been waiting longer than the maximum time allowed for word that their applications for Medicaid had been approved, according to numbers from the state Department of Human Services. Federal rules allow a maximum of 45 days for state Medicaid agencies to process applications. Some of those applications have been pending since last year, according to an Arkansas Medical Society official.
