The number of people without health insurance increased from the previous year for the first time since the Great Recession, according to new figures released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau.
"The poverty rate went down, the economy is doing well, and yet we're still seeing more people uninsured," said Laura Skopec, a senior researcher for the nonprofit Urban Institute's Health Policy Center.

Louisiana’s uninsured rate declined slightly from 8.4% in 2017 to 8% percent in 2018, reflecting 19,000 newly covered residents, according the bureau's annual report on health insurance coverage released Tuesday. Nationally, the uninsured rate is 8.9%.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare has released a waiver that would require most Medicaid patients to get a referral before seeking family planning services from anyone other than their primary doctor.
Public comment has opened, the department said in a news release Wednesday, and will continue through Oct. 12. The state will then submit the proposed waiver to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for approval.

Maine is more than eight months into Medicaid expansion under the federal Affordable Care Act and trends around who is enrolling and where they live are starting to emerge, bucking some expectations and pointing out access challenges.
The state has enrolled more than 36,000 people in the program as of last Friday, about half of the 70,000 residents expansion is estimated to cover after implementation earlier this year.
