Webinar Wednesday on Nov 20: 'Diabetes Prevention, Policy & Patient Intervention' by Novo Nordisk
MHPA
Diabetes is an epidemic that needs many approaches to address and limit its impact. Understanding the size of the epidemic locally via screening is key. We will review a number of approaches to screening and preventative services. Also essential in addressing the diabetes epidemic is stakeholder support. The Diabetes Barometer, designed for plans to use with stakeholders in their respective communities, provides practical tools for plans as they discuss the epidemic in their respective states.

In addition to screening and stakeholder engagement, we will also focus on a suite of patient education and engagement tools that are available to plans to help their members living with diabetes.

Wisconsin governor's Medicaid maneuver
NPR and Kaiser Health News
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who appears to be laying the groundwork for a 2016 presidential run, is getting attention for his entitlement reform. He is one of 25 Republican governors who are rejecting the health law's expansion of Medicaid. But Wisconsin’s own Medicaid program, known as BadgerCare, was more generous than many states, and now Walker wants to transfer many of those people to the insurance marketplace created by the law.

According to the United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection survey, 38 percent of voters say that Congress should fully repeal the law so it is not implemented at all.

North Carolina Attorney General: Refusal of Medicaid expansion 'perplexing'
The Associated Press via WRAL-TV
North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is prepping for a 2016 run for the Executive Mansion, said he can't see why Gov. Pat McCrory and other Republicans leading the legislature refused to expand Medicaid coverage this year except for politics. "The decision not to take Medicaid has been the most perplexing decision of all and it's a clear example of putting politics over policy," Cooper said.

In Pennsylvania, a big gap in health insurance coverage
The Philadelphia Inquirer and Kaiser Health News
The frosty weeks before the holidays were always the hot season for Andre Butler. He would head downtown, looking snappy in his "blacks and whites" — industry argot for tuxedos — to work as a bartender, server or host in Center City's finest hotels. But post-recession, those parties have become fewer and smaller. The only reminder for Butler of those days is the constant ache in his legs and hips from the years of lugging heavy trays. He needs tests to pinpoint the cause of his pain, but lacks insurance or the money to pay out of pocket.

Medicaid gets Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry support
The Spokesman-Review
Idaho's biggest business lobby has come out in favor of expanding Medicaid for Idaho's poor, a move expected to save state taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. It's a sign that Medicaid expansion is gaining traction despite Idaho lawmakers' intense dislike of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare. Broader coverage for the poor could help Idaho more than most other states because of the way it handles catastrophic medical costs.
