Texas panel backs Medicaid waiver but not expansion

A Texas legislative committee is urging the state to renew a special Medicaid waiver that reimburses hospitals that care for the uninsured in lieu of Obamacare's Medicaid expansion, according to a report. The state Senate Committee on Health and Human Services declined to recommend widening Medicaid eligibility under the federal healthcare law but did not rule out the possibility of an alternative path to expanding coverage.

Healthy Pennsylvania enrollment begins but program could be scrapped next year

As of Dec. 1, uninsured Pennsylvanians whose annual income is less than 138 percent of the household federal poverty limit may apply for health coverage through the state's new "Healthy PA" program, which offers subsidized, Medicaid-like insurance plans through private health carriers. For those determined to be eligible, as many as 600,000 low-income Pennsylvanians, coverage could begin as soon as Jan. 1.

Pay for success, social impact bonds: Request for proposals

The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative is releasing a request for proposals Thursday, Dec. 4, from healthcare entities to develop asthma-related social impact bond/pay for success projects. GHHI and its partner, the Calvert Foundation, will provide technical assistance to five selected healthcare organizations. An informational webinar will be held on Thursday, Dec. 18. Proposals are due Thursday, Jan. 15.
GHHI and Calvert Foundation are proud recipients of a $1.011 million award from The Corporation for National and Community Service's Social Innovation Fund. With this funding, the organizations will work to build on the asthma-focused PFS currently being developed in Baltimore by a partnership between GHHI, the Calvert Foundation and Johns Hopkins HealthCare and the Johns Hopkins Health System. Wyoming devises plan to expand Medicaid

With a plan released by the administration of Gov. Matt Mead, a Republican, Wyoming has become the latest state seeking to expand Medicaid. The plan would provide Medicaid coverage to an additional 18,000 low-income people, according to the state's health department. If it wins federal and state legislative approval, Wyoming will join 27 states that have expanded the program under the Affordable Care Act, including nine with Republican leadership.
