Medicaid expansion improved insurance stability for low-income pregnant women

Medicaid expansion improved the stability of insurance coverage for low-income women in the months leading up to and right after their baby's birth, according to a study at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. The findings showed that with the expansion of Medicaid, there was a 10-percentage-point decrease in women going uninsured or changing insurance plans in the time around their pregnancy.

Coronavirus: Medicaid enrollment increases

An analysis of Medicaid enrollment data during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic saw a jump in enrollment during the public health crisis. The study, performed by Families USA, compares data from 38 states on Medicaid enrollment in May with data from August. The analysis found that, while there is wide variation among the states, all 38 showed continuous increases of month-over-month enrollment and eight states specifically saw large jumps in August.

    Colorado's Medicaid funding projected at $897 million for 2020-21
    State of Reform
    Colorado's Medicaid system could see increased state and federally-funded medical services premiums spike to $897 million in the 2020-21 fiscal year from $208 million. The medical services premium totals are paid through a combination of state and federal funds, Chief Legislative Analyst Eric Kurtz said, with the federal government increasing their percent paid by 6.2% for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency declaration.

    DC council votes to extend telehealth coverage for postpartum care

    Washington, D.C., lawmakers are set to enact a new law that would greatly expand telehealth coverage for postpartum care. The Postpartum Coverage Expansion Act Amendment of 2020, which was passed unanimously by the DC Council, extends postpartum inpatient and outpatient benefits through Medicaid from up to 60 days after childbirth to at least a year, and instructs the mayor to seek approval from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services that all Medicaid health policies cover "innovative models of care," include telehealth visits, remote patient monitoring and mHealth interventions.

    Missouri Democrat running for governor unveils health agenda
    The Associated Press via Huron Daily Tribune
    Democratic candidate for Missouri governor Nicole Galloway said Wednesday that she wants to pass a state law protecting health insurance for people with preexisting conditions. The proposal is part of the state auditor's health care plan if voters elect her over Republican Gov. Mike Parson on Nov. 3. She also pledged to enact Medicaid expansion as called for by voters, attempt to bring down health care and prescription drug costs, and promote more primary care clinics in rural and predominantly Black areas.
