.NABE NEWS
Dear Fellow NABE members:
I just want to let you know how excited I am to be serving as your NABE 2022-2023 President.
My friends, we are in a very special moment. Imagine—the Secretary of Education is himself a bilingual English Language Learner.
Together, with the help of a truly welcoming Secretary and Department of Education, we at NABE are positioned to make a powerful, unprecedented difference in the lives of English Language Learners.
And I am happy to say, my own union, the American Federation of Teachers, through its national policy advocacy, and the work of its thousands of local affiliates, is thoroughly committed to lifting up and addressing the educational, social, and emotional needs of English Language Learners.
Individually, as you well know, as teachers, researchers, and advocates, we can make an extraordinary impact in the lives of our students, colleagues, and communities. But together, through NABE and its affiliates, working with partners like the AFT, I believe we can move mountains.
So PLEASE think about getting more involved in your local NABE affiliate! PLEASE reach out to your ready-made partners in the AFT and other like-minded community organizations.
And I'll look forward to seeing you all at the next NABE convention.
Regards,
Evelyn DeJesus
NABE President

The nation needs more bilingual, dual language teachers
The Century Foundation
As a current middle school English learner (EL) specialist, I have experienced firsthand the absence of student and teacher resources needed to produce an equitable, rigorous learning environment for English learners. Schools historically fail at serving English learners adequately, whether through not having enough qualified teachers, lack of funding, or vague or limited federal and state guidelines for how schools should be educating them.

Exposure to accents helps children learn words
Phys.org
If elementary school children are accustomed to many regional and foreign accents because they hear them frequently in their linguistic environment, then it is easier for them to learn new words from other children who speak with unfamiliar accents.

5 ways to elevate the effective teaching happening in your school
Edutopia
When I started teaching in the '90s, I was a bit like Tom Hanks in Castaway. I lived on my little island. I created my lessons independently. Sometimes those lessons were good, and other times not so much. How many learning opportunities were missed in my development as an educator?

How social-emotional learning became a frontline in the battle against CRT
NPR
It's hard to pinpoint when exactly the questions started coming in. Angelyn Nichols, an administrator for Virginia Beach City Public Schools, thinks it was sometime in early 2021.
What she does know is that no one really expected them in the first place, and no one expected them to keep coming – week after week, and now, year after year.

Lost in translation? How to support your 'second language' employees
Human Resources Director
The English language is the dominant language in the business world and an essential tool for employees globally. However, even in multi-cultural organizations, for those employees who aren't native English speakers learning the language doesn't guarantee you're a natural. Something Alex Burke, CEO of Education Perfect (EP), experienced first-hand while spending time in South America's workforce.
