Let's nurture multilingualism in our youngest learners
EdSource
The school year has begun, which for many young children means they have entered a brand-new environment and sometimes are faced with a whole new language to learn. Brain science tells us that learning two or more languages early in life is beneficial, and many school districts are offering dual-language programs to children as young as 4.

.NABE NEWS
Dear Fellow NABE members:
I just want to let you know how excited I am to be serving as your NABE 2022-2023 President.
My friends, we are in a very special moment. Imagine—the Secretary of Education is himself a bilingual English Language Learner.
Together, with the help of a truly welcoming Secretary and Department of Education, we at NABE are positioned to make a powerful, unprecedented difference in the lives of English Language Learners.
And I am happy to say, my own union, the American Federation of Teachers, through its national policy advocacy, and the work of its thousands of local affiliates, is thoroughly committed to lifting up and addressing the educational, social, and emotional needs of English Language Learners.
Individually, as you well know, as teachers, researchers, and advocates, we can make an extraordinary impact in the lives of our students, colleagues, and communities. But together, through NABE and its affiliates, working with partners like the AFT, I believe we can move mountains.
So PLEASE think about getting more involved in your local NABE affiliate! PLEASE reach out to your ready-made partners in the AFT and other like-minded community organizations.
And I'll look forward to seeing you all at the next NABE convention.
Regards,
Evelyn DeJesus
NABE President

Learning a new language differs between children and adults
Psychology Today
The songbird is among the classical species studied as a model for understanding the neurobiology of language. It uses song and vocalization to communicate information for its survival. The songbird's language is genetically wired into its brain and develops early in life. Interestingly, some songbirds appear to sustain the ability to learn new songs throughout their entire lifespan. This process appears paired with their ability to form new neural cells and synapses, even during adulthood.

Student journaling as a tool for teaching English language learners
Continental Press
Journaling has become a staple in many classrooms, giving students additional writing practice to help them sharpen their skills. While writing can be daunting for any student, it can be distinctly challenging for English language learners (ELs/ELLs). When teaching English as a second language (ESL), journaling can be an effective tool for developing skills and building confidence in young writers.

What is the importance of picture books for ELL students?
Continental Press
In the classroom, picture books can be a valuable teaching tool for students at any grade level. However, they are especially beneficial for English language learners (ELLs). Good picture books for ELL students will help them form connections between their native language and English, build vocabulary, and support academic learning standards.

Does learning a language improve cognitive skills?
Tes Magazine
When it was revealed earlier this year that entries had fallen for GCSE modern foreign languages, many in education reacted with dismay.
Speaking to Tes, Ofqual adviser Professor Robert Coe said that languages were in a "vicious circle" of decline that could only be broken by a change in policy.

How can learning English as a foreign language benefit you?
University of the People
There are 1.5 billion English speakers in the world, according to Babbel. Learning English as a foreign language or as a second language can have many benefits in a person's life. It can help you access more opportunities in academia and in the workforce. And, not only is English beneficial for non-native English speakers, it can also be beneficial for native English speakers who are looking for a rewarding job teaching English to students around the world.

A sustainable plan for meeting learners where they are
Edutopia
Differentiated instruction in schools can be as straightforward or as complex as we make it. We do have a tendency, however, to overcomplicate it. We convince ourselves that the more individualized instruction is, the more personalized it will be.

Despite digital transitions, handwriting maintains classroom benefits
K-12 Dive
Taking notes by hand is a slower practice than tapping across a computer keyboard, but some experts say taking notes by hand allows more space to process thoughts, creates better-organized materials and strengthens fine motor skills. Learning how to hold a pencil or pen requires fine-tuning the right mixture of pressure and movement to get an implement to make the letters that build words and notes.

America's education report card shows we're failing our most vulnerable students
The Hill
As soon as the pandemic started, we saw communities and families of color experience disproportionate impacts on their health, jobs, income and education. While other recent reports exploring the depths and intensity of pandemic-related learning loss have focused on the outsized loss suffered by students of color, along with other student groups, the recent release of NAEP's report on the impact of the last two years is jarring in its overwhelming assessment that we have failed our historically underserved student populations once again.

How schools can rise above resistance to social and emotional learning
District Administration
There are no controversies over the all-in approach to social and emotional learning at Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia. SEL, which has been equated with indoctrination by some conservative groups, has been so widely embraced in Alexandria City that district leaders have added an "A" for academics to the acronym.
