Reflections on the first ever NABE Slow Institute
By José A. Carrillo, M.A., M.Ed.
The expression 'Time flies when you're having fun' can definitely be applied to the NABE slow institute. It is hard to believe that we've already had 12 sessions and have come to the end of our institute, but what has not come to an end is the everlasting quest for knowledge for us, as educators, now that our minds have been stimulated with this plethora of timely and relevant information.
We would like to thank each of our NABE Slow Institute speakers, and all of our participants, for making this event a collaborative conversation with the goal of helping our English learners succeed and flourish during these unprecedented times.
There is no doubt in my mind that many of us were left with a thirst for more. Let us take that additional step in being responsible for our own learning and, taking these words that were so positive and motivational, let them stimulate our mind and hopefully lead us to maybe one day being asked to share our own research during a future event. Let us use the very first NABE Slow Institute as a catalyst for many positive things to come in the future, in times of COVID-19, and for bilingual education across the world.
Warm Regards,
José A. Carrillo, M.A., M.Ed.

Schatz, Murkowski demand Census Bureau comply with court ruling, continue counting until Oct. 31
Senator Brian Schatz
U.S. Senators Brian Schatz, D-Hawai'i, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, urged the Census Bureau to reverse its decision to end the self-response period and field data collection for the 2020 Census on Oct. 5 and instead allow operations to continue until Oct. 31. This bipartisan effort follows the Census Bureau's decision to ignore a recent federal court ruling, which found that ending the counting operations early would result in a serious undercount.
