Incorporating students' native languages to enhance their learning
Edutopia
From Feb. 17: As we embrace culturally responsive and culturally sustaining pedagogies, we are abandoning destructive English-only policies. Unfortunately, English - first policies often place other languages last — and, by extension, the cultures represented by non-English languages.

The United States needs bilingual education
High School Insider (Commentary)
From March 10: Bilingual education is a basic necessity in today's global society. It's a form of education in which students need to learn two or more languages. It's designed to provide dual language programs, in which instruction is given in two languages.

Why culture matters when teaching English learners
Graduate Programs for Educators
From Nov. 17: We often think of English learners as simply students who do not speak English. This is a highly over-simplified understanding of students within this population. Our understanding of English learners and how to best serve them educationally is much deeper and wider.

What I learned from teaching English-language learners for 30 years
Education Week
From April 14: When I started teaching in California’s public schools 30 years ago, it was the beginning of the so-called English-only movement. “Qualified teachers” for multilingual learners were chosen to teach if they had a good working knowledge of English. They were expected to focus on grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. Students learning English were not allowed to speak in their primary language in the classroom.

As bilingual programs expand, let's keep an eye on equity for English learners
EdSource (Commentary)
From May 12: Teachers are highly influential in creating inclusive bilingual classrooms, so it’s critical they understand how their own beliefs and practices affect their students. But, too often, educators lack the professional support, resources and structures to be as effective as possible. By learning how to recognize the dominant beliefs held about their English learner students, they can better identify the harmful mindsets we are all deeply immersed in and that are still alive today.

Why emergent bilingual education needs equity-centered pedagogies
IDRA
From May 5: Piecemealing equity in education without structured programming is clearly not working. School leaders must be knowledgeable about bilingualism, bilingual education and their schools’ emergent bilingual student populations. It is time to boost standards with culturally sustaining, equity-centered pedagogies.

Strategies for teaching academic language to ELLs
Continental Press
From Nov. 3: English Language Learners (ELLs, ELs ELDs) face a variety of challenges in the mainstream classroom. Along with social and cultural differences, ELLs may also struggle with the language used in the classroom. This academic language can be difficult for ELLs to grasp and can pose a stumbling block when it comes to classroom success.

Reframing dual language education in the U.S.
International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism
From June 30: The Office of English Language Acquisition (2015) reports that with the increase of diversity in the student population, bilingualism has also burgeoned in K-12 schools. Many linguistically and culturally minoritized students in K-12 educational contexts continue to be confined in instructional language models that exclude the full use of their linguistic and cultural resources; these inequities are persistent even in dual language classrooms.
