The National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications has announced its roster of 2016 chapter officers. Elected by their peers, newly elected and incumbent officers are serving two-year terms as of Jan. 1. The newly elected officers representing NAMIC's 16 nationwide chapters are scheduled to convene in Miami on Feb. 4 and 5 to participate in strategic planning sessions focused on team building, membership development and branding recognition.

NAMIC has launched its call for nominations for the 2016 Next Generation Leader Awards, honoring emerging executives of color for their outstanding contributions to the success of their respective organizations. Business leaders age 45 and under are eligible for nomination. Awards are presented in four categories: Cable MSO, Cable Programmer, Technology Company/Disciplines and Creative Disciplines.
The nominations deadline for this year's Next Generation Leader Awards, presented in partnership with Multichannel News, is Feb. 15. Nominations may be submitted electronically by accessing the online submissions page here.

The Multi-Ethnic Media Coalition has launched an initiative to diversify the film industry, much, as it claims, it helped diversify the TV industry. The group — comprised of the NAACP, the Asian Pacific American Media Coalition, the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, American Indians in Film & Television and National Hispanic Media Coalition — said during a press conference in Pasadena, California, that it intends to make its case in meetings with reps from the six major studios: Fox, Universal, Disney, Sony, Paramount and Warner Bros.

"Welcome to diverse TV," double winner Idris Elba joked toward the end of the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday night, as the British star introduced a clip from "Beasts of No Nation." Following an awards season marked by controversy over the all-white slate of acting nominees at this year's Academy Awards, the SAG Awards highlighted a number of actors of color during the ceremony, including Elba, Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis.
Backstage after winning best actress in a television drama for "How to Get Away with Murder," Davis said she was "enjoying the moment," but cautioned that a call for diverse voices in art should not be considered a fad.

Univision Communications Inc. (UCI) unveiled the Univision Media Center at the New Venture Middle School in the Bronx, New York. The first of several Univision Media Centers planned for middle schools in the U.S., this first-of-its-kind facility will provide students with the tools and training to understand how a media newsroom operates. In addition to gaining experience with production and editing equipment, the students will receive training from media professionals at UCI.

The U.S. electorate this year will be the country's most racially and ethnically diverse ever. Nearly one-in-three eligible voters on Election Day (31 percent) will be Hispanic, black, Asian or another racial or ethnic minority, up from 29 percent in 2012. Much of this change is due to strong growth among Hispanic eligible voters, in particular U.S.-born youth.

The 2015 Biennial Alumni Tracking Survey conducted by The LAGRANT Foundation (TLF) found that success rates among their past scholarship recipients was at an all time high with 88 percent reporting that they were currently working in a communications related field. The survey, which is conducted every two years, measures the success of the foundation's mission by obtaining information on the advancement of each recipient and the manner in which TLF has impacted their progress.
