Although the North Carolina Supreme Court ruling in Piro v. McKeever, a case involving statutory immunity for social workers who must report suspected cases of child abuse, can be considered a victory, advocacy efforts in the state must continue in order to achieve, preserve, and advance the gains that have been made thus far. Read NASW's statement on the case. Access the amicus brief prepared and filed in the case by the North Carolina Chapter of NASW and the National NASW office.
NASW and the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care (SSWLHC) issued a joint statement on February 13, 2017, to oppose efforts to repeal or change key provisions of the Affordable Care Act. Significant gains that have been made in health insurance coverage, health care access, and opportunities for health care social workers should not be undone. Contact your members of Congress to voice your concerns.
Although Judge Gorsuch's judicial record is relatively sparse as it relates to the foremost issues of the day, there are indications his judicial philosophy may conflict with social work values.
Foundations of Social Work Practice: A Graduate Text, 5th Edition incorporates evidence-informed practice models with principles of structural practice, placing constant emphasis on the need to challenge structural injustice while supporting the casualties of that injustice, working to realize a progressive vision of a just and caring society.
