More than half of adolescent people who are LGBT are being pushed to change their sexual orientation, a practice that could leave them more prone to do poorly in school, suffer from depression, or die by suicide, according to a recent study from the Family Acceptance Project. NASW member Caitlin Ryan, a clinical social worker who is director of the Family Acceptance Project, said her organization is using the study in its culturally sensitive work to help parents and caregivers be more supportive of youth who are LGBT. So-called conversion therapy has long been condemned by the National Association of Social Workers because the practice is emotionally damaging and because NASW does not support efforts to change anyone’s orientation and does not agree that orientation can or should be changed.
Social Work Advocates, February/March 2019
(NASW membership includes magazine subscription.)
The barriers for medical marijuana patients and the myriad of specialties in the social work profession are a perfect intersection. Social workers are specially trained to help clients navigate through difficult systems and advocate for improvement, especially when they’re working against what is widely accepted as the public’s interest.
In late January NASW responded to a proposed rule addressing Medicare drug pricing, issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). If implemented, the rule would allow new restrictions on coverage of medications under Medicare Part B and Part D. NASW urged CMS to withdraw its proposals, noting that implementation of the rule could delay or prevent access to medication for Medicare beneficiaries living with cancer, depression, HIV, seizure disorder, and other serious illnesses.
